How many days after your state refund is deposited will your federal refund be deposited?
State returns are processed by a separate entity and therefore have their own processing time, unrelated to federal processing time. It can take 21 days, sometimes a little longer, to receive your federal refund, and different factors can impact its processing time. Please visit the IRS Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions help article below for more information.

I have gotten my state returns before my federal returns in years past. Hopefully it means your state is more efficient than the federal govt.
Its different in every state. But because the new tax laws now its setting everyone back
. Its a really bad backlog from 2019 til now and all the fraud that happened during this pandemic it messed everyone up. So ita basically a waiting game at this point
You're correct. Each state is different with regards to sending refunds, and the IRS has been responding to changes in the law in the middle of tax season. Here is a link with the latest information and guidance that we have been given from the IRS: What if my IRS refund is taking longer than 21 days? You can also continue to check the IRS Get My Payment tool for the latest information, but it will not update more than once per day.
@Takobell
I have been too! I am baffled and perplexed by this. I can’t understand what is the issue at hand! Although comforting knowing am not alone. Hopefully something soon for us both!
I just got my state return today and yes, I would assume that the IRS is slower because they are dealing with the whole America and state would be faster, so it should be coming soon if both said accepted, which I was also wondering because that’s what happened to me too!
You are likely correct - the IRS has been challenged in keeping up with changes in the tax law and processing returns. This is very likely the reason you are still waiting on a federal refund but have already gotten your state refund.
According to the Washington Post (Mar 12, 2021):
"Nearly 7 million tax filers are in limbo and facing substantial delays in getting refunds so far this tax filing season, as the Internal Revenue Service struggles to keep up with the demands of issuing stimulus checks and implementing myriad tax code changes from coronavirus relief packages, including the one President Biden signed this week.
There are 6.7 million returns that have not yet been processed, more than three times the number in the same period last year, when fewer than 2 million returns faced delayed processing, IRS data shows."
The IRS Where’s My Refund? site is still the best first place to go for information.
I got my state taxes first, I am concerned will I receive Federal?

It's unpredictable which one will come first. Some states are very quick-- such 2-3 weeks, while some states can take many weeks. It has nothing to do with whether you receive a Federal refund or not. The IRS has its hands full with staff shortages due to Pandemic, added burden of multiple stimulus payments, etc., so delays are not uncommon for some people this year.
The IRS says 9 out of 10 filers who efile and choose direct deposit will get their Federal refunds within 21 days after being accepted. Some returns are processed fairly quickly, while others require additional processing due to specific items in the return. Some are pulled at random for more thorough investigation.
If you efiled, you should double-check to be sure the return was efiled successfully and accepted.
If you used Online TurboTax, you can sign into your Online Account and check the efile status at the Tax Home.
If that showed it was accepted, you can use the "Where's My Refund" tool at the IRS website below to monitor the status of your Federal refund.

TIPS when using the IRS WMR tool:
You can also try phoning the IRS refund hotline. I've seen it work for some users when the WMR tool didn't. 800-829-1954
I received my state tax already. And for my federal it says still processing. And they both got accepted 2/20/2020
Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities. There is no rule as to which one will come in first or how long it will be between their arrival in your account.
TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer. “21 days” is not a promise from TurboTax or the IRS. Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic. The IRS is backlogged —-they are still trying to process millions of 2019 returns; they received millions of e-filed on the day they opened for 2020 returns, and now they are burdened with sending out another round of stimulus checks.
Some delays are resulting from incorrect amounts that folks entered for stimulus checks they received. Many people have been confused by the recovery rebate credit and completed it incorrectly. The IRS may delay your refund while they cross-check to see what you received.
First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 34of your 2020 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

Which number do I call to find out what has happened to my Federal return
According to this IRS update as of April 16th:
The IRS is now opening mail within normal timeframes. The IRS has also made significant progress in processing prior year returns. As of April 9, 2021, we had 1.5 million individual tax returns received prior to 2021 in the processing pipeline. Including current year returns, as of April 9, 2021, we had 16.2 million unprocessed individual returns in the pipeline. Unprocessed returns include those requiring correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount or validation of 2019 income used to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Advance Child Tax Credit (ACTC). This work does not require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund. If, as a result, a correction is made to any RRC, EITC or ACTC claimed on the return, the IRS will send taxpayers an explanation. Taxpayers are encouraged to continue to check Where’s My Refund? for their personalized refund status and can review Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions.
How long you may have to wait: The IRS understands the importance of timely processing of tax returns and refund issuance. We are processing returns received over the summer and fall in 2020 due to the extended July 15, 2020 tax filing due date. While the majority of 2019 refund returns have been processed, in some cases, we are processing tax returns that were mailed with a payment even though payment associated with these returns have been processed by the IRS. However, we are rerouting tax returns and taxpayer correspondence from locations that are behind to locations where more staff is available, and we are taking other actions to minimize any delays. Tax returns are opened in the order received. As the return is processed, it may be delayed because it has a mistake including errors concerning the Recovery Rebate Credit, is missing information, or there is suspected identity theft or fraud. If we can fix it without contacting you, we will. If we need more information or need you to verify that it was you who sent the tax return, we will write you a letter. The resolution of these issues depends on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return.
What you should do: If you filed electronically and received an acknowledgement, you do not need to take any further action other than promptly responding to any requests for information. If you filed on paper, check Where’s my refund? If it tells you we have received your return or are processing or reviewing it, we are processing your return, but it may be under review. We’re working hard to get through the backlog. Please don’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.
E-filing your 2020 tax return: To e-file you will need to enter your AGI from your tax year 2019 tax return. If your 2019 return has not yet been processed, you may enter $ 0 (zero) as your prior year Adjusted Gross Income. If you used the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool last year to register for an Economic Impact Payment, enter “$1” as your prior year AGI. See Claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit if you aren’t required to file a tax return.
My state return came before my federal return what does that mean I mailed mine
