Married filing jointly. Both born before 1959. Form mandates Std Ded of 2 boxes $30,700. I think it should be 3 boxes $32,200. Can this be changed in program?

Your standard deduction lowers your taxable income. The standard deduction makes some of your income “tax free.”  It is not a refund.  You will see your standard or itemized deduction amount on line 12 of your 2023 Form 1040.

2023 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS

SINGLE $13,850  (65 or older/legally blind + $1850)

MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $13,850  (65 or older/legally blind + $1500)

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $27,700  (65+/legally blind) )  + $1500 per spouse

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD  $20,800 (65 or older/blind)  + $1850)

Is one of you also legally blind?  If so, you need to indicate that in My Info.

TurboTax is correct.   Your standard deduction starts at $27,700

  • Add $1,500 if you were born before January 2, 1959
  • Add $1,500 if your jointly-filing spouse was born before January 2, 1959
  • Add $1,500 if you were blind as of December 31, 2023
  • Add $1,500 if your jointly-filing spouse was blind as of December 31, 2023

$27,700 + $3,000 = $30,700

Why do you think it should be 3 boxes?    You and spouse is one box each over 65.  Is one of you blind?

For 2023 the standard deduction amounts are:

Single 13,850 + 1,850 for 65 and over or blind (15,700)

HOH 20,800 + 1,850 for 65 and over or blind (22,650)

Joint 27,700 + 1,500 for each 65 and over or blind (29,200/30,700)

Married filing Separate 13,850 + 1,500 for 65 and over or blind (15,350)

the standard deduction for 2023 married filing joint is 27.700

+ 1500 for each that is 65 or over on 12/31/2023

+1500 for each that is legally blind as of 12/31/2023

age 65 or older is determined from the birth dates entered

on the personal info worksheet there is a box to check if legally blind at year-end
