IRS Letter 6475

@Rivergator wrote:

I have a bit of a different situation.  In 2020, I made too much for any get any kind of stimulus distribution.  As I'm doing my taxes for 2021, TT is saying that I qualify for the 3rd stimulus and to put the amount noted on IRS Letter 6475.  I never received such a letter or the stimulus, though I did receive unemployment in 2020, which I put under 'Income'.  Do I just put in an amount of $0?   I know this may sound stupid, but I don't want my tax return to go into a black hole for 7 months, like it did last year.  Thank you.

When asked if you received a certain amount for the 3rd stimulus payment you should answer NO.  Then where asked how much you received enter 0.

You are eligible for the $1,400 Recovery Rebate Credit based on your Adjusted Gross Income on the 2021 tax return.  The credit will be entered on your federal tax return Form 1040 Line 30.

Where is the 6475 amount entered on Turbo Tax?  It only asks about the 6419.

To get to the stimulus questions in TurboTax at any time, you can search for stimulus or recovery rebate credit then hit ENTER and there should be a Jump to link

If you are trying to trigger it,

Click on Other Tax Situations at top

Click on Let's get started

Answer some questions then Continue

Then click on Let's keep going

Next screen is for the Third Stimulus, if you qualify

If you did not get prompted to enter your stimulus information, that means you either:

  1. Filed as a dependent being claimed on another tax return, or
  2. have an AGI too high to claim the recovery rebate

If you are being claimed as a dependent or your Adjusted Gross Income is above the maximum to be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit, the stimulus question will not be asked.

Enter stimulus or recovery rebate credit in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen.  Click on Jump to stimulus or Jump to recovery rebate credit.

Letter 6475 is a notice sent to taxpayers so that, when they file their tax returns, they'll know the correct amount of the third stimulus they received.

That's all that you need it for.

See TurboTax’s IRS Letters 6419 and 6475 for the Advance Child Tax Credit and Third Stimulus: What You Need to Know... article for more information.

So, with a family of 5 x $1400 that equals $7000. I received payments of $750 starting in July (750x6=4500) leaving the balance at $2500 that should be added to this refund 2021. Both my spouse and I received our 6475 form and both had the divided $7000 totals on it of $3500. I log onto my irs app to see about or refund and it updated stating that they have made adjustments and now we will be receiving $2500 less than we were expecting Bc of the Recovery Rebate Credit. Which makes zero sense. It stated that the reason is one or more of the following and then proceeds to list possibilities that don’t apply to us such as the children’s social security #’s could be wrong (isn’t the case), our combined income is over $150k (also not the case), a dependent may be aged out (also not the case). So I’m extremely confused as to what the issue is. We obviously qualified for the third stimulus being that we received the $750 for 6 months and got our 6475 with a combined $7000. So I’m at a loss.

@Bettendorf_33 Go to Federal Review for the questions about letter 6475 and the recovery rebate credit.

@JohnW152  please help me understand this. I 100% believe that there has been an error made on the irs side.

IRS Letter 6475

@Lf03 You are confusing the letters from the IRS.   Letter 6475 is about the 3rd EIP payment---the one for $1400 per person.

Letter 6419 is about the child tax credit payments.  Those are the advance child tax credit payments you would have received between July and December.

Be very careful about which letter you are looking at when you enter the amounts.

Letter 6475 is entered in Federal Review for the recovery rebate credit.

Letter 6419 is entered for the child tax credit:

Federal>Deductions and Credits>You and Your Family>Child Tax Credit

The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you.  It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021.  Enter the information from that letter carefully.

The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040.   Then it will calculate down to the refund you see on line 35a or the tax due on line 37.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

NOTE:   The CTC is indeed a “credit” that can be applied toward any tax liability that you would otherwise have to pay as “tax due”  to the IRS.

Ok, I looked at both forms (6475 and the 6419). My 6419 form says $2250 with 3 for number of children and my spouse has the exact same form. On my 1040, line 28 says 4450 and line 30 says 2500. The 8812 portion of my taxes doesn’t seem to have any entered numbers past section b. Is this the problem? @xmasbaby0
