Turbo Tax requires a 5-digit number, one I can make up. IRS gives a 6-digit number. So my self created 5-digit number keeps being rejected by the IRS. What gives? I don't think I'll use Turbo Tax anymore. Instead I' go back the old school paper and pencil form.

The 5 digit e-file pin and the 2019 AGI is used to verify you with the IRS for an e-signature on your 2020 tax return.
If you were a victim of identity theft and reported that to the IRS, the IRS will have sent you a 6 digit IP PIN to be entered on your tax return. If you print and mail the tax return you have to manually entered the 6 digit IP on the tax return in the Signature block area on page 2 of the Form 1040. The 5 digit self-selected PIN is not used on a mailed tax return.
If you e-file the tax return then you need to enter the 6 digit IP PIN you received from the IRS before filing the tax return.
To enter a 6 digit IP PIN
Or enter ip pin in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to ip pin

An Identity Protection PIN would have been sent to you by the IRS after you had reported an identity theft to the IRS.
Go to this IRS website to retrieve your IP PIN - https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/retrieve-your-ip-pin

Most taxpayers don't need an an IP PIN — the IRS only issues them in select cases; they are 6 digits. If you know you need an IP PIN to file your taxes and you lost your CP01A letter (or never received it), you can:
We're unable to issue IP PINs and you won't find them on your tax paperwork. You can only get IP PINs from the IRS.
Is my Self-Select PIN the same as my IP PIN? NO, it is not - click for more info.
