What's an IP PIN? Do I need one?

An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is a 6-digit number that the IRS gives taxpayers who were victims of tax-related identity theft.

An IP PIN and a Self-Select PIN are two different things.

  • An IP PIN is a 6-digit number that the IRS gives taxpayers who were victims of tax-related identity theft. Someone can also self-register to receive an IP PIN.

  • A Self-Select PIN is a random 5-digit number that you enter as your electronic signature when e-filing your return.

The IP PIN validates a Social Security number's true owner and prevents future tax fraud. Most taxpayers don't need one.

You can still opt into the IP PIN program, even if you aren’t a victim of identity theft. An IP PIN adds another layer of security protection, giving you peace of mind when you’re filing your taxes.

The IP PIN is typically issued before the next tax season and is valid for one calendar year. It auto-renews unless you sign in to the IRS website to deactivate it.

If you got an IP PIN or CP01A notice from the IRS in the past (or you opted in to the pilot program), you must use your 2025 IP PIN to prove your identity when you file your 2025 return.

We can't issue IP PINs and you won't find them on your tax paperwork. You can only get IP PINs from the IRS.

Once you have the PIN

  • Go to the Did you or your spouse get an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes? screen, under Other Tax Situations and select Yes.

  • On the Review your Identity Protection PIN info screen, select the pen icon (Edit) next to the spouse's name.

  • On the Tell us spouse's Identity Protection PIN screen, enter or correct the IP PIN and select Continue.

  • On the Review your Identity Protection PIN info screen, select Done.

  • Select File in the menu.

  • On the Welcome back screen, select Continue.

    • Don't select Fix my return.

  • Select Start next to Step 3 to refile your return.
