Tax Year Prior to 2020: I don’t have a 1095-A form why does it keep asking me about that?

There may have been an errant entry during the interview that indicated to the program that you received the form.

To get back to that portion of the interview, type 1095-a in the search box in the right corner of your screen, then click the link Jump to 1095-a.

Go through the interview process until you get to the Did you receive Form 1095-A for your health insurance plan? screen, and select the checkbox to the left of No, I didn’t receive form 1095-A.

Tax Year Prior to 2020: I don’t have a 1095-A form why does it keep asking me about that?

I'd like to add an adjustment to the below ...

This is something I noticed.  I inadvertently got mixed up in TurboTax, so I got into this cycle with the software where I would repeatedly ask me to edit the Premium Amount on 1095-A --when instead, I in fact had a 1095-C.

I was frustrated looping thru this screen as I tried to file.

Here's what I found.

for 2021 tax year, I clicked beside the bold sub-category Affordable Care Act.

In coming back repeatedly to this section to try to remove a mention of 1095-A, I would come to a small table.  It was just a list of a single line  item, showing my name with the two buttons afterward of "Edit " and "Delete".  I kept going to Edit this.

What finally fixed it for me ...was done in two portions:

6.  to delete that line row.  Somehow, the software then went another pathway & tried to advise that I should be sure to enter 1095-A info if I had any.

7.  I continued out of this sub-section ...and then re-returned thru the sub-category Affordable Care Act.

8.  It was here that the suddenly a question appeared asking IF I had a 1095-A.  I FINALLY GOT THE CHANCE TO SAY NO!

(ATTN TurboTax staff ... this question should remain visible every time a user goes thru this sub-category .

.. it should not be hidden away if a line item is enter for 1095-A)

Hope this helps save the sanity of any others getting looped by the software.

thanks

Tax Year Prior to 2020: I don’t have a 1095-A form why does it keep asking me about that?

There are a couple of reasons why this can happen.  Please try these workarounds.  The first will clear the form.  From time to time it will come back.  Then use the second alternative.

On the menu bar on the left that shows.

  1. My Info
  2. Federal
  3. State
  4. Review
  5. File
  6. Select Tax Tools
  7. On the drop-down select Tools
  8. In the Pop-Up menu select Delete a Form
  9. This will give you all of the forms in your return
  10. Scroll down to the form you want to delete
  11. Select the Form
  12. Click on Delete.
  13. Always use extreme caution when deleting your tax return.  There could be unintended consequences.

The IRS is rejecting returns because they believe you or someone on your return had insurance through the marketplace. If you did have insurance through the marketplace in 2020, you may still just be on their list.

The workaround is to enter $1 for the 1095-A.  This will not affect anything on your return but having the form there may get the IRS to accept your return.

To do this take the following steps:

  1.  Click Deductions and Credits
  2. Scroll down to Medical and Click Show More
  3.  Click Start or Revisit next to the ACA
  4. As you walk through the questions, you will be asked if you received a 1095-A.
  5.  If you did NOT, click YES anyway.
  6.  Enter 0's for the Marketplace identifier and Policy number.
  7. Enter $1 for January monthly premium amount and SLCSP
  8.  Walkthrough to the end and submit your return.

@Dtvharriett  If you did not have health insurance through healthcare.gov---also known as marketplace insurance or Obamacare---at any time in 2021 then you will not have a 1095A.    When it asks if you  have a 1095A you say NO, and just move on.   You do NOT enter a 1095B or a 1095C.  At all.

If the IRS rejected your return for the 8962 form being missing then you must have had Marketplace insurance for some part of 2022 and a 1095-A should have been mailed to you.  Check with www.Healthcare.gov and see if you have one in your account.

You may be surprised that you were signed up for the ACA insurance for some part of the tax year ... so contact the ACA and ask.

There aren't 2 questions.  Just one.  I selected "no" and it's still declining the return.  I never had the 1095A.

Tax Year Prior to 2020: I don’t have a 1095-A form why does it keep asking me about that?

There are two reasons why your return could be rejected if you weren't covered at all in 2022 through the Marketplace.

1. A form could be stuck in your return, prompting the rejection. If you have already attempted to e-file your return but were rejected with code F8962-070, you may find that you won't be able to answer No to the question Did you receive a Form 1095-A? When you select No, TurboTax will revert your selection back to Yes. This is because Forms 1095-A and 8962 are currently included in your return.

2. The IRS has information that someone in your household should have a 1095-A. This could be because you or a dependent had Marketplace insurance in a previous year, or because a form is stuck in your return.

If you don't have a 1095-A and know you won't be receiving one, you can delete the 1095-A from your return. This will also remove the 8962 and allow you to change your answer to the 1095-A question to No. Here’s how:

  1. Select Federal from the left menu, then Deductions & Credits
  2. Scroll down to Medical and select Show More
  3. Select Start or Revisit next to Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A)
  4. As you walk through the questions, you'll be asked if you received a 1095-A. Even if you didn’t receive this form, select Yes
  5. You’ll need to create a “dummy” 1095-A: enter 0's for the Marketplace identifier and policy number, and $1 for the January amounts
  6. On the screen Here’s what we have for your 1095-As, select Delete next to the fake form you just entered, then Yes, to remove the 1095-A entry
  7. Select Tax Tools from the left menu, then Tools, then Delete a form. You shouldn’t see Form 8962 or Form 1095-A in the forms list. If you do see these forms, select Delete next to the name of the form to remove it from your return
  8. Select File from the left menu and continue through the process to refile your return

The IRS has information that someone in your household should have a 1095-A. This could be because you or a dependent had Marketplace insurance in a previous year, or because a form is stuck in your return.

If you've confirmed that no one on your return had insurance through the Marketplace for the tax year 2022, but the IRS mistakenly thinks they did, it’s OK to create a Form 1095-A with minimal information in it to satisfy the IRS for e-file purposes. If you use this method, and it contradicts what the Marketplace has on record, then you may receive a CP2000 Notice from the IRS.

What is your situation?  What is the rejection?  Are you being told you need to include the 8962 or are you being told you should not include one?

Did you or someone on your return have insurance through the Marketplace?  If so, you would need to include the 1095-A in your return.

Did you or someone on your return have insurance in the past through the Marketplace?  If so, you will need to contact the Marketplace to see if they still have you or someone on your return listed as being insured.
