Extension payment or Estimated payments ? Did you enter them yet ???
To enter, edit or delete estimated taxes paid (Federal, State, Local) -
Or enter estimates paid in the Search box located in the upper right of the online program screen. Click on Jump to estimates paid
If you used the TurboTax Easy Extension to electronically file the extension request, Form 4868, and make the tax payment with the request, the payment should already entered on your tax return. Provided you used the same user ID for the 2017 online tax return as was used to use Easy Extension. You can check to see if the amount is on your tax return by clicking on Tax Tools on the lefts side of the screen. Then click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Then click on Preview my 1040.
To enter, change or delete a payment made with an extension request (Federal, State, Local) -
On the next screen select the type of extension payment made and click on the start or update button
Or enter federal extension payment in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to federal extension payment
I filed extensions and paid using turbotax so i'm confused as to why they wouldnt't show up
It is possible you filed the extension(with payment) in a different account which is why you must always review the entire return before you efile it.
nope, i only have one account
Well if you missed entering in a payment and filed the return the IRS usually catches this error and fixes the return automatically.
how could I "miss entering in a payment" if i filed and paid my extension through TurboTax? Seems like I didn't "miss" it; TurboTax didn't carry it forward from the extension.
When you use a DIY program then it is your responsibility to make sure the return is correct before you file it ... that is why in the FILE tab step 2 you are given the option to save the PDF so you can review the entire thing ... this is required by law. If you didn't catch the missing amount before you filed it then this is on you. Nothing you can do now but wait for the IRS to correct the error.
Are you making excuses for TuboTax's flaw or just stating the obvious? What is the value prop of TT if not accuracy?
Does it want your bank account number for a refund or tax due? Usually when you pay Estimates or an extension payment it is just an estimated amount and not the actual final tax due or refund. Or maybe it's for a state return?
I am making a statement of fact for ALL DIY programs ... they are only as good as the data entry person. No program algorithms can replace your eyes and brain. When you sign the return you are stating under oath :
Under penalties of perjury, I declare that I have examined this return and accompanying schedules and statements, and to the best of my knowledge and belief, they are true, correct, and complete.
Turbo Tax is a self prepared return. It has no way of knowing or checking that you entered something wrong or in the wrong place or entered something twice Or left something out. It doesn't check against any outside sources. The IRS has copies of all the W2s and 1099s your employer and banks/brokers, etc. sent in to match against. Turbo Tax only checks the calculations of what you entered. It is your responsibility to check it over before you file. They only Guarantee that the calculations are right based on the entries you made.
And I am making a statement of fact that I filed and paid an extension through TurboTax. Logic dictates that the amount paid with the extension would be carried forward in the final return. Do you disagree with that?
Yes, I made the entries through TurboTax - estimated taxes paid through TurboTax. Are you saying that it's OK for those NOT to be carried forward to the final return?
The operative word is "should" but it is your responsibility to make sure it "does" ... I still think you used the EASY EXTENSION option in a different account ... try looking to see if you do have more than one account which is easy to do and very common AND would explain what happened to you ...
It's common to end up with multiple accounts. First LOG OUT of whatever TurboTax account you're logged into right now. Then use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of user ID's for an email address. Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used
