How do I tell whether I'm using desktop of online versions? I want to compare 2022 with 2023.

I downloaded 2023 with a code from a DVD, so suspect it's desktop, but some information is already filled out, so I clearly don't know what I did last year either. I really want to get everything in one place.

Returns prepared using the CD/download are stored only on your own hard drive.  They are not stored online in your TT account.  Only returns prepared using the online software are stored online in your account.

We see people get confused and they keep logging in to online software which will require them to pay at the end.   You need to use the desktop software.   One way to tell if you are using the right software---your tool bar.   Online software has the toolbar in a black vertical column on the left side of the screen.   Desktop software has the tools up on the top of your TT screen.

SAVE YOUR TAX RETURN !

EVERY year before mid-October you should save a copy of your tax return as a pdf and print a copy of it for your records.  That way you will not be searching online frantically when you need it for a lender, FAFSA forms, your next tax return, etc.

NOTE:  TurboTax and the IRS save returns for seven years.  Returns older than seven years are purged.

When you filled out your return did you go online and log in?  And see a black column down the left side with the menu items, Federal, State, File etc. That is Online.

The Windows Desktop program is blue bar menu bar across the top and the menu items like Federal, State, Review, File.

OK, using desktop version. In 2023, I found a nifty two-year comparison form. I don't see it for 2023 return, and I've clearly made a large error because this year's AGI is lower than last year's but I own much more. Do I have to finish the return before that one pops up?

In the desktop software the Tax History is still available in Forms Mode in the list of forms.  In that left-column list it's way down near the bottom of the list of Federal forms.    There is both a 2-year comparison Form and a Tax History form (5 years).

Regarding the comparison form, I don't see it in 2023. Maybe I am blind, but "Two-Year Comparison" isn't in my forms list for 2023 desktop, only in the 2022 version..
