A 2023 tax return cannot be filed until after January 1, 2024.

If there is no taxable income reported on the tax return then the tax return cannot be e-filed.

So I just have to wait until January 1st?

Yes, you should be able to e-file after January 1, 2024.

However, the IRS will not be accepting any type of tax return until mid to late January.  So if you file a return before the IRS is accepting returns then your tax return will be sitting on the TurboTax servers in a Pending state until the IRS starts pulling the tax returns.

What are you entering on your tax return?   If you have zero income, wny are you filing a return?   What do you hope to accomplish?   The IRS is not going to begin accepting e-files until sometime in January.  If you have no income what is your hurry to file?

SO...you even entered all your interest from bank accounts too?

Any interest earned at 50cents or greater must be entered too.....and Banks haven't indicated their Dec interest payments yet....even pitifully low amounts (if 50cents or higher for the year).

_______

Of course, I recognize that some folks don't have any bank accounts, and you could be among them.

DO NOT E-file before the very end of January....mid February is safer.  You just don't want to be put in the position of having to amend a tax return for something you forgot about...or a tax form you didn't realize was being issued during January.       Amending can be a pain you just don't want to have to deal with..

And Turbo Tax hasn't updated the program and all the forms yet.  The IRS hasn't even finalized several forms.  Then they have to approve the forms Turbo Tax uses.  There will be several more program updates to come.

2023 isn't even over yet.  You may get a W2 or 1099 in January you weren't expecting.  You have to wait until the employers, etc. send out the tax forms.  They have until Feb 1 to send them to you.    If you worked you have to wait for the W2 to come.  It will probably not match your last paystub.  There are many pre-tax items that affect it.

@talonbell307 You say we misunderstood.  But in mid-December, before tax year 2023 has ended, you say you have "all my information to file my 2023 returns" and the software "will not let me proceed"

That sounds like you are attempting to file your 2023 tax return and then you asked if you could file on January 1.   What are we mis-understanding?   We cannot see your tax return or your information, so we cannot know what income or information you have already entered or may need to enter.  But we do know that the tax year is not over, and that employers, clients, and financial institutions have until the end of January to issue important tax documents, and we know that the forms and schedules for many things are not yet ready.  All of your 2023 information has to go on the same Form 1040; rushing to file before you have everything can just lead to creating more work for yourself later if you end up having to amend your tax return.

__________

No...sometime after Jan 1st....not the 1st, 2nd or 3rd either.

1)  A simple 1040 W-2 only file, might be allowed to be e-filed 4 or 5Jan as the first possible date....even though it will just sit "locked" on the TTX servers AND if you do e-file it then, you can't get it back if you want to change or add something.

2)   BUT, if your tax form contains certain forms, you may have to wait until later in January.  Certain forms that back up the 1040, will not be ready until some of the weeks that follow that 4 Jan date.  Like Schedule A, 17Jan;  Form 8606 for IRA contributions,  10 Jan  ;  a few on 17, 21, or 24 Jan.....and a very few (mostly disaster loss forms or the 1040x) are on into February.
