The North Carolina Individual Income Tax Return Form D-400 is not yet available for e-filing.  It is estimated to be available on 02/24/2022

If you want to e-file your federal tax return now then change how you file the NC state return.  This assumes that all of the forms and schedules included in your federal tax return are available for e-filing.

If using the TurboTax online editions click on File on the left side of the online program screen.  On Step 3 of the File section click on Start or Revisit.  Select the button File by Mail.  Then change the filing status of the state return.

After the federal return is e-filed and accepted by the IRS you can e-file the state return when it is available for e-filing.  Just use the same procedure and change the state return back to e-filing.

Thank you for the suggestion.  I just filed my federal return.  The problem is with the state returns and it is not just RI and Texas - it is here in North Carolina also (and probably other states).

Intuit customer service (in general) is terrible.  After being on hold for 15 minutes, both the representative and the supervisor could not solve the problem.  I told them I have a solution for next year - HR Block.

Yeah when does this get fixed - so we all can transmit our returns to our respective states ? 

Or least tell what the issue is and expected timeframe to fix.

Transmitted the Federal separately already, just need to send in the one to NC now.

DoninGA - posting the same message to 100 different people is not help. Please stop.

The D-400 forms are not needed by my return. I can mail them in - but Intuit took my 20$ for to transmit electronically. 

If 2/24 is the date - then Turbotax or Intuit should response to this thread. And explain why the D-400 are preventing tax returns in NC form being transmitted when most don't need them.

95% of the posters on any of these threads do not view any of the posts on the thread for answers to their problem.  They just write their message. 

So that is why the same message is being posted and will continue to post to help those who are requesting assistance.

I am a volunteer on this forum, have been for over 11 years with all the TurboTax iterations of these user websites.

I tried to file my NY and NC taxes today to be proactive. TurboTax immediately took out the filing fee but when I went to hit transmit I kept getting the message that says "tax 2021 transmission not available". Do NOT take people's money if your system is not ready.

I'm getting the below message: "The Intuit Electronic Filing System is having difficulty recognizing the data in the return you are sending. Tax Year 2021 transmissions are not available - Turbo Tax is not ready to process Tax Year 2021 for this return". 

Why?????

Is this North Carolina by any chance? 

Some NC forms (including the main Form D-400) are not yet finalized and available for efiling.   Projected availability date is 2/24/2022, according to the availability tables:

If you wish, you can efile the Federal return now (if all your Fed forms are available) and efile the NC state return later.  To do that, you would need to temporarily change the filing method for the state return and tell TurboTax that you intend to "mail" the state return.  Then when the state forms are available you can switch the method back to efile.
