Tax return is on extension. Extension was not done through TurboTax, as it was prepared by hand. Filing instructions show that returns must be postmarked by April 18, 2022. How can the due date be changed to October 17?

Federal taxes owed on a 2021 tax return were due and payable on April 18, 2022.  The extension request is only for filing the tax return.

Use the April 18, 2022 date on for the payment date for taxes owed.

Are you mailing your return?  You can still efile it until Oct 15 or 17.   Don't worry about the instruction sheet.  Did you make a payment with the extension?   Did you enter it?

To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension)  go to

Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)

    Deductions and Credits

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button

Next page second section Payments with Extension

Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid

All taxes were paid by the original due date. Extensions were timely filed.
I know when the tax returns must be filed.
I’m only asking how to have the extended due date appear on the instruction letter.

IGNORE the instruction sheet and mail or efile the return by 10/17/22.

If you go to the filing instruction sheet, click on the date line and override typing in the correct date information.  You can also complete Form 4868 and check the box "Check this box to freeze the amounts flowing to this form" then the filing instructions will update automatically to the correct extended due date.
