dependent credit line 30 of 1040

Received IRS refund which was 2800 less than the refund amount on the 1040.  Accompanying letter provided no specifies, Found 2800 on line 30 of 1040.  No dependents listed on 1040, why did turbotax add this amount on the 1040 line 30?  Recovery rebate credit worksheet indicated 2 dependents listed on 1040 .  we never added dependents. Need an explanation is this a software error that turbotax needs to fix.

This sounds like an input error, but a software glitch cannot be ruled out.

What is the TurboTax phone number? (intuit.com)

It sounds as if you answered incorrectly when you were asked if you received the third stimulus payment of $1400 per person that was sent in mid-March of 2021.   If you said you did not receive that amount, then the software put $2800 on line 30 as a recovery rebate credit.  The IRS checks all returns with amounts on line 30.   If their records show that you already received the $1400 per person then they reduce your refund.  You cannot get that EIP twice for the same two people.

LOTS of people have made mistakes this year with the recovery rebate credit by "forgetting" that they received the $1400 per person stimulus checks last year.  They answered no to the questions for the  recovery recovery rebate credit and put the $1400 per person on line 30 of their returns.  But you cannot get it twice, so the IRS removes it when it is there by mistake.  The IRS sent letter 6475 showing that you received the 3rd stimulus check.

It is very important that if you filed a joint return—-the IRS sent letter 6475 to EACH spouse.  You had to enter the total amount received.   Many people misunderstood and entered only the amount from one of the letters.

Try checking your online account with the IRS (and if you filed a joint return—check for BOTH of you)

Does the IRS show that you received a $1400 per person stimulus or EIP check in 2021?   Did you receive it?   When you were asked on your tax return did you say no?   Was there $1400 per person on line 30 of your tax return?

If the IRS says you got $1400  per person last year but you did not receive it you can have it traced.

Which line of the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet are you referring to?  Line 6 or Line 7?

line 6

On the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet an amount of $2,800 on Line 6 indicates that you are filing jointly with your spouse and you answered Yes to Line 2 or Line 3.

If Line 13 of the Worksheet is blank or has a 0 (zero) entered that indicates that you told the TurboTax program you did NOT receive the 3rd stimulus payment for both you and your spouse.

However, the IRS has records that show you were sent the 3rd stimulus payment so they removed the $$2,800 Recovery Rebate Credit that was entered on Form 1040 Line 30.

Go to this IRS website for your tax account to see if the 3rd stimulus payment is entered - https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
If you are Married Filing Jointly also check your spouse's tax account.

If you checked your bank account in the March - May 2021 timeframe and there is not a $2,800 EIP3 payment from the IRS then go to this IRS website for how to start a trace on the payment - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-third-economic-impact-payment-topic-j-p...
