Box 12a on my W2 shows a negative number. When trying to put in a negative number in turbo tax it does not allow me to. Is there any way to put in a negative?

Negative amounts in Box 12 code A is uncollected Social Security tax.  These cannot be reported on a W2 as negative numbers. Contact your employer to ask why this was reported in this manner. If you don't receive an answer, leave it off the return.

If there was too much Social Security tax collected by the employer and reported in Box 4 of the return, instead of representing this as a negative number in Box 12, contact your employer and ask for:

  1. A refund for the excess amount, and
  2. Issue  a corrected W-2 (also called a W-2c) which shows the correct Box 3 and Box 4 amounts.
  3. Also tell them you cannot claim this on your tax return by representing this as a negative number if this is the reason they reported this as a negative number in Box 12 of the W2.

wait  12a is the box number but there should also be a code letter. anything from A (tax expert correct) to HH

if there is no code letter contact your employer. as  matter negative numbers should not be reported by your employer for anything in any box 12.

I suspect they might have taken too much off social security tax. Is box 1 susceptible to social security tax? or is the number on box 2 exclusively for that.

Boxes 3, "Social Security Wages", and box 7, "Social Security Tips", are the amounts paid to you by the employer that are subject to social security tax.  The maximum amount you can be taxed on for 2022 is $147,000.

As Mike9241 posted you should not see negative numbers reported on your W2, so to clarify, you should contact your employer.
