Negative amounts in Box 12 code A is uncollected Social Security tax.  These cannot be reported on a W2 as negative numbers. Contact your employer to ask why this was reported in this manner. If you don't receive an answer, leave it off the return.

If there was too much Social Security tax collected by the employer and reported in Box 4 of the return, instead of representing this as a negative number in Box 12, contact your employer and ask for:

  1. A refund for the excess amount, and
  2. Issue  a corrected W-2 (also called a W-2c) which shows the correct Box 3 and Box 4 amounts.
  3. Also tell them you cannot claim this on your tax return by representing this as a negative number if this is the reason they reported this as a negative number in Box 12 of the W2.
