Wanted to share additional information i found on this topic. For anyone who has I-485 pending, you can get a EAD which will allow you to get a SSN and then file the tax as dependent. This information might come handy to someone in future.
Now that my mother's Green Card and SSN is. here, i would like to file my return electronically. I had filed for the extension, since the SSN had not arrived in time. Can i still file electronically?
Can i still file electronically? YES ... but if the number is too new you may not get accepted right away ... it usually takes 6 weeks or so for the IRS system to be updated from the SSA.
Got it.
Since i had filed for an extension, and never sent in my printed return, i don't think my return has been filed yet. I never mailed in my return since i have until October 18th.
However, Turbotax only gives me option to amend the return, which i did.
1. All I wanted to do was to update my mother's Social Security Number. Isn't this possible without amending the return, since i never filed my taxes? All i filed was the extension.
2. It looks like amended return can no longer be e-filed. Can i cancel the amendment and get back to where i was to update only the SSN?
3. Is there a customer service number to call to talk to a turbotax representative about this?
Bumping to see if i can get additional feedback on this topic.

It sounds like you told Turbotax that you would "file" your return by mail. That marks the return as "filed" or "completed", so it only gives you the option to amend when you re-open it. You need to get back into the program and undo the filing step so it looks like an original never-filed return. Then you can add your dependent and either e-file or file by mail.
If you are using turbotax online, I think you will need to call customer support. There may be another trick to reopen a filed return, but I haven't kept up with the details of how the program function. Someone else may know if there is a trick.
To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.
This will take you back to the 2022 online tax return.
How do I cancel or undo an amended return in TurboTax Online?
If you started amending your tax return by accident and would like to cancel the amendment:
If you haven't efiled or mailed your return you can go back in and change anything you want. Do not click on Amend!
Click on Add a State to let you back into your return.
From Tax Home (the first screen you see after you sign in), scroll down to Your tax returns & documents. You may have to select Show to open the drop down.
Select 2022, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this is just the workaround).
Then when you are ready to file you can try to switch to efile.

Sorry more info. I see you tried to amend. You should have clicked on Add A State.
