Accidentally filed Non-Filer, how to fix

I filed the non filers form and got an accepted email. When i returned to the portal i read that i should NOT use it if you are married and are not filing with your spouse. I'm not sure what to do. Please help!

Accidentally filed Non-Filer, how to fix

Quick question. On April 26th I went onto freetaxusa and filed the form on there for "stimulus only" I got an email saying my return was accepted by the IRS.

Me being entirely too inpatient, I then went onto IRS.gov and filled out the "non filers" form for my stimulus check.

I got an email 24 hrs later informing me that the IRS rejected my non filers form because of duplicate ssn's, I'm assuming that's because I now have filed for the stimulus check through freetaxusa AND on the IRS website.

My question I need answered so badly is, my first form that I filed through freetaxusa is still going to be filed, correct? And my second form I filed on IRS that was rejected due to me already filing, will just be thrown out right?

Or does this mean both times I filed are BOTH thrown out now?

The second one will be thrown out.

You're safe.

@Joheat55 I mailed my paper tax return in March and submitted non-filer form in April and several days ago I got the stimulus check. I'm sure my first tax return hasn't been processed due to COVID-19 (IRS stopped processing paper returns). According to your replies above, my paper return (the correct one) is going to be rejected? Then should I amend my tax return? I asked several CPA's opinions, they told me for now it's no need to amend just wait for how IRS would deal with this.

The second one should had been rejected due to 2 returns with same social securities numbers.

You should had got an email from whichever company processed the second one stating "rejected".

So, yes...when they process the second one it will be flagged that the number(s) have already been used.

Then they'll reject it.

If it had been from the portal for non-filers you wouldn't have to amend cuz the company is who rejects it. The IRS doesn't know about it.

I don't know how the IRS will deal with the paper one.

I agree with the CPAs,, let them tell you that it has to be amended.

I'm not positive it will have to be.

Hi, I also made this mistake but file as self employed. Would I do the same thing? Or should I just print out my tax return through Turbo Tax and explain in a cover letter?

Thank you

Accidentally filed Non-Filer, how to fix

If you submitted the non-filer form, it was processed by the IRS as an original filed return.  Any subsequent filing cannot be filed electronically; it has to be mailed in.

If you file your return with a Form 1040X it will be processed like an amended return.

However, here are two other options:

  1. You don’t need to fill out the 1040X to get your return processed.  All you need to do is indicate in a cover letter to your 1040 that you filed a return to get the stimulus check and that this is a corrected return.
  2. You can simply write ‘1040X amended return’ on the top of the paper 1040.

Right now the IRS is not processing paper returns, but there will be no way for your to efile, so this is your only option.  Be prepared for a longer than usual processing time.

Accidentally filed Non-Filer, how to fix

I accidentally filed non filers thinking it was for the stimulus check. I have been getting mixed information as to how to fix this problem. Do I mail In my taxes and add a cover letter to it explaining error or do I amend my taxes. But how do you amend something that was rejected, therefore not field. The only one filed is the nonfilers one that I did in error but how do you amend that one? Need help

Its not going to matter yoy didnt didnt mess up anything for them your not going to get the 1200 stimulus check anyway because your social security number was claimed  on someone elses tax return as a dependent so therefore you are inneligable for the stimulus check and your non filer application is void and will be denied so no worrys dont det them make you feel bad but the person that claimed you got extra money on thier tax refund for claiming you and also gets the extra 500 on thier stimulus so if anything you should be the one mad that they messed it up for you and they should be giving you money

Accidentally filed Non-Filer, how to fix

Hi Spata1357, thank u for ur response. But, we already filed 2019 tax return and it is already in process before I fill out the non filer form. This year tax filed as married filing jointly. Also, if IRS were suppose to void then I should have got the rejection email saying that my ssn was already used but instead I received "IRS accepted my return". So, this was the confusion as I thought I messed up our return.

You read my post wrong ..

No- NOONE CLAIMED ME AS A DEPENDANT.

The reason I got an email saying "duplicate ssn" is because, like I previously stated, I accidentally filed TWO TIMES. Once on freetaxusa and the second time on IRS non filer form.
