Are you using Online TurboTax or desktop software (CD/download)?
On line

To enter a 1099-R in Online TurboTax, here's a shortcut to that part of the Retirement Income section:
A few screens into the 1099-R interview, you'll come to a screen that says "Lets import your tax information" which has a search line to enter a bank/financial institution name or to click on a financial institution's logo. That is optional and only if you want to import the 1099-R, and in order to import, the institution has to be an import partner with TurboTax. If you don't want to import it, or if your institution doesn't participate, scroll down to the bottom right of that screen and choose "Change how I enter my form", then on the next screen that asks "How do you want to enter the 1099-R" scroll down and choose "Type it in myself."
Then it will ask you "Who gave you the 1099-R?" and there are 4 choices. This is so it will know what type of 1099-R you have.
You'll then be able to enter the Payer's name and the info from your 1099-R.
Hi, well I’m on the page “Let’s start with some info from this W-2” I clicked on magnifying icon and took me to “We’re here to help you”.

Why are you in the W-2 section? How did you end up in that section? What type of 1099-R are you reporting? What is it for?
I gave the routine 1099-R instructions above.
I can tell you additional ways to get to the 1099-R section, if necesary.
I receive a pension. Where should I start to be able to file it?

It depends on what kind of pension. What kind of 1099-R did you receive? There are 4 variations of 1099-R that I list below.
Which of these types? (your form should say)
1099-R (Retirement plans like 401k's, IRAs, pensions, and annuities)
CSA 1099-R (US Govt Civil Service retiree annuity)
CSF 1099-R (US Govt Civil Service survivor annuity)
RRB 1099-R (railroad annuities and pensions)
It’s a pension I receive from company my ex husband works for. He’s a truck driver.

I listed 4 sets of numbers above. Which of the 4 types above is indicated on your form you received?
Sorry it’s through the company, not from the company.
It has Form 1099-R

OK. My first answer above told one method to get to the Form 1099-R interview. I have no idea how you ended up in the W-2 interview by mistake if you followed my instructions exactly like I outlined them. So try this alternate method:
With your return open, go to the left menu column.
Click on the TAX TOOLS tab, then when the menu expands click the TOOLS tab that's underneath it.
In the Tools popup window click on the blue button TOPIC SEARCH.
In the Topic Search window enter 1099-R in that search line.
Then in the selection list highlight 1099-R and click GO.
The next screen should ask "Did you get a 1099-R in 2020?"
When you say "yes", that starts the 1099-R interview.
I didn’t know where to begin so that’s where I started on the W-2 section but I got it and you were so helpful! Thank you!!!
