Is anyone else having trouble importing from E*Trade? I keep getting this: Something unexpected happened. Try again in a few hours. (101)

Sadly, this didn't work for me. I copied and pasted https://us.etrade.com/e/t/user/login

It didn't work for me. Instead, it only let me choose e-trade and when I did, the url was https://us.etrade.com/home and never connected even though etrade logged me out because, it said, I had logged in another way!

And I have tried the other way (just going to etrade on their list) over and over and over without success!

I provided the url and it only let me choose what it already had - which was etrade banking. And that didn't work, over and over again ad nauseum.

I am thinking of using a different tax return company this year. One that actually connects to etrade!

"I think the issue is that Turbotax can't handle a large number of transactions."

Maybe that's it. Maybe everyone on etrade got their forms and tried to file, and turbotax couldn't handle it. Maybe it will work if I wait a few days.

Have you double-checked to make sure you are trying to import from the correct brokerage? Some users have had success trying to import from E*Trade Bank instead of E*Trade Securities.

For more information, please see How do I import my 1099?

Depending on the version of TurboTax you are using,  TurboTax does have a limit on how many transactions can be downloaded. Please see How many stock transactions can TurboTax Online handle? for additional information.

Thank you for your reply. I did notice that there were people saying to make sure it said "bank". That's what mine said. In fact, only one suggestion popped up, and it said "bank" (and no choice, but to take that option) - so I am guessing they took off the option for "securities" because of the problems people were having last year.

Since this is the first time I've had a problem after my documents were available on e-trade (3rd year), all I can think of is that it has something to do with a lot of people descending on Turbotax at the same time or something unknown.

I think I already said this, but the first time I tried this I was already logged in to e-trade in another tab. When I went to that tab, it said it had logged me out because I had logged in through another source (I forget the word they used, but source-I hope-gets the idea across) so I know I got logged in okay according to e-trade.

The problem seems to be more Turbotax not being able to pull out the document that is on e-trade. If I was a compute geek, maybe I'd have a better idea of what's going on. 🙂

If you have a large number of stocks, you may want to follow the instructions here, as it can allow you to enter a large number in Turbo Tax.

It was the right decision to wait a few days. It worked without a hitch today. I don't know what the problem was, but everything's good now.

I had a lot of trouble.  Instead of typing in Etrade, scroll down through the financial institutions and you will find what you need.

I was encountering the same issue and the fix is to use the "E*Trade Securities" option instead of the "from Morgan Stanley" option

What is the threshold for number of trades Etrade can import or that Turbotax can handle? I think this is the issue with the import, not that this is seen on any of the answers. If it's impossible it should be stated. And Intuit needs to add attach pdf capability by next year. This is a known issue for years it seems.

10,000 Transactions as of today 03/25/2022 per https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/entering-importing/help/how-[product key removed]actions-can-turbo...

I tried a few things before my transactions loaded.  I had too many transactions to manually input.  Finding the "E*trade" selections in the pull-down menu and trying each of them finally got me in.

TurboTax Online and TurboTax Desktop can handle up to 10,000 transactions per brokerage.  For more information, please see the below TurboTax Help Article.

Two F-ing hours later on a call with TT, this is their response:

  • "Because there is a workaround to enter 1099 forms in a summary fields, we will not create a case for this."

This is ridiculous. I paid money to get Premier specifically for the integrations with E*Trade so all of my transactions are imported and I don't have to worry about incorrectly entering data. E*Trade is LITERALLY one of the displayed logos when you click "Import" (see below). Yet the integration is broken and TT refuses to create a ticket acknowledging that this is a bug.

What did I pay for then? If I wanted to manually enter my taxes I would have gotten a pen and paper like it was 1980.

When you call the rep says "I don't see a case for this", but when they see that there is a bug they say "we can't create a case because there is a workaround". This is some chicken and egg BS! How will anything get fixed if you don't admit it is broken in the first place. To my knowledge there is no way to see if this is being worked on or when it will be fixed. I will be using another tax service and asking for a refund as this is absurd.

I had this trouble last year, and again this year.  Try clearing your browser of all cookies and caches.   I was able to successfully retrieve all my etrade statements after doing this.  (Somehow etrade doesn't recognise your credentials if your browser cache contains an etrade login data.
