Upon performing the Smart Check in TurboTax, I keep getting an error for Line 15 of the IRA Contributions Worksheet. NOTE: Interestingly, the issue is with Line 14 of the worksheet, even though the error indicates that the issue lies with Line 15.
Despite going through the process (twice) for filing my 1099-Rs and then following the process for documenting a Backdoor Roth IRA conversion AND telling it that I planned to make all of my IRA contributions this year non-deductible, it still ended up assigning a deductible amount to Line 12 of the IRA Contributions Worksheet. So, when I entered the full 6000 as the non-deductible portion of my 2020 contribution, it still used some calculated value. Line 14 (amount you elect to make nondeductible) cannot exceed Line 13 (although I think that they mean Line 12).
So, despite the UI errors with the line # referencing, it basically looks like it is assigning a value for my spouse's 2020 IRA contribution as deductible, even though I already told it not to. And now it is saying that the amount that I am electing to make nondeductible cannot exceed the deductible amount. This makes sense, but this is not what I entered when completing the step-by-step guide and is not what I did last year (using the same process).
It looks like I cannot correct Lines 12 & 13 by hand - for whatever reason (that's unclear). Any help would be appreciated...

Same here, please help! I'm using the Windows desktop software version 2020.48.27.84
It is working fine for my IRA but not for my spouse, who is filing a "spousal IRA" because she didn't earn any income.
I think the source of the problem is something called "IRA Worksheet" in the "Forms in My Return" section, though the head of the document says it is called "IRA Deduction Worksheet." I think the problem is: "Fraction of line 13 that is deductible." is 0.600 for me. I don't know where this comes from. This seems to be a non-standard form. There is only one Google result for "Fraction of line 13 that is deductible," and it seems to be an upload of someone's TurboTax form. I want that to be 0, I told TT in the wizard I want that to be 0, but the dollar amounts on line 15 and 16 that result from multiplying line 13 by 0.600 seems to be where the problem on my IRA Contributions Worksheet is coming from.
I have the same exact problem. Can someone from TurboTax answer this please? it seems like it is a glitch...
thank you!
@racquems Entering a backdoor Roth is a two step process and it requires that you have done them in order.
Here is the process for TurboTax.
If you have already made some entries then you need to delete what you have already done and re-enter the contribution and conversion.
I am having this same issue. I have deleted my previous entries and renentered the information in order by following the steps in your link. I still got the same result.
The problem is that the wizard (accurately) tells me to make my traditional IRA contribution non-deductible, but during the complete review I am advised to check this entry "IRA Contributions Worksheet: Line 15 - Amount of Spouse's IRA contribution elected to make nondeductible should not be more than zero." Bottomline: the step-by-step tells me to designate that contribution as non-deductible, but the review says that it can't be non-deductible. Please advise!
It seems part of your contribution was automatically made nondeductible because of your income and retirement plan at work. Therefore, you will only enter the part that was not made automatically nondeductible.
For example, you contributed $6,000. $1,500 were automatically made nondeductible because of your income. On the "Choose Not to Deduct IRA Contributions" screen it will say that you have $4,500 deductible traditional IRA contribution. You will select to make it nondeductible and enter $4,500.
This will result that $0 are deductible as shown on the next screen.
Thanks. That is a confusing way to ask the question. In future versions, it would be helpful to add your explanation as expanded information or to reword the final question as "Tell us how much of the deductible-eligible traditional IRA contribution to make non-deductible."
In your example, Jane is actually making all $6,000 of her traditional IRA contribution non-deductible, which is what the prompt asks, but is not the answer it wants.
Overall, your detail helped me resolve my problem
