I am glad this worked for you. Thank you for providing the community that this resolution worked @websr3.
I am in the same boat as everyone here. As a part of my troubleshooting I deinstalled all copies of TurboTax, deleted all directories, rebooted, made sure everything was updated, and tried to re-install TurboTax 2021 and it still doesn't work. After reinstalling TurboTax 2020, it didn't work either. This is a major problem with no apparent solution from Intuit. I keep submitting the error reports, but no progress towards any sort of a solution. When this started several weeks ago I spent several hours on the phone with Intuit including escalating to several people. They basically said they couldn't help me and that another technical level was required but it cannot be accessed via phone apparently. I was told that this team would see the errorlog files transmitted everytime the program failed, but I am not sure I believe that.
paulb15480, I might not have explained myself real good on how I re-installed TT 2020.
1. I deleted all of turbo tax 2020 then rebooted.
2. Instead of reusing CD from TT 2020, I downloaded TT 2020 from Turbo Tax website and then reinstalled and that worked for me. When installing from the downloaded file from turbo tax you will still need the activation code from the cd they sent you.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for your clarification. In all cases I used the downloaded version of TurboTax. Still didn't work. This is obvioiusly more than just an isolated situation and I imagine the closer we get to April 15 this is really going to blow up for Intuit. My suspicion is that there is some sort of Windows Registry problem, but I am certainly not qualified to hunt that down on my own. When I was trying to fix this myself after no meaningful help from Intuit I deinstalled all versions of TurboTax and all associated directories and remaining files. Then I went searching for all TurboTax entries in the Registry to delete them. I deleted many entries, but then I got chicken that I had gone too far. So I wound up restoring my PC from a backup. Bottom line is, all troubleshooting attempts failed. So, still waiting for a fix from Intuit.
I agree with you about the problem could be registry problem. Just like error problems when doing windows 10 updates from time to time. Did you do a sfc scan tool at windows command prompt? Instructions below.
Scan System Files
The system files can also be scanned and repaired from the Command Prompt.
Right click on the Command Prompt, and chose "Run as Adminstrator"
Type (make sure you push space after typing sfc) “sfc /scannow” and press enter, the scan will start and may take quite some time depending on your PC speed (up to an hour may be). It will either automatically repair the files or let you know if there is a problem and provide its details. If it finds problems and fix's them reboot the computer if no problem just type exit or close out the command prompt.
System files corrupted might also cause this problem. Sometimes running the sfc command a few times will fix corrupted system files. If not you might have to use the DISM tool. How to use DISM command tool to repair Windows 10 image
On Windows 10, the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) is a tool designed for administrators to prepare, modify, and repair system images, including the Windows Recovery Environment, Windows Setup, and Windows PE. However, you can also use the tool with Command Prompt to fix common problems with the hidden recovery image on your device.
However, if the replacement files inside the Windows 10 image are damaged in any way, the SFC command won't work. In this particular situation, you can use DISM to scan and repair the "install.wim" image, which you can then use with SFC to repair your installation.
Warning: Although these are non-destructive commands, you'll be making system changes. This means that it's recommended to create a temporary full backup before proceeding.
To check for issues within the image with DISM, use these steps:
Open Start.
Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
Type the following command to perform a quick health check and press Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Once you complete the steps, the command will run and verify if there is any data corruption that needs fixing.
Checking issues with DISM using ScanHealth option
Alternatively, you can run DISM with the ScanHealth option to perform a more advanced scan to check if the Windows 10 image has any problems.
To perform an advanced scan with DISM, use these steps:
Open Start.
Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
Type the following command to perform an advanced DISM scan and press Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
After you complete the steps, the advanced scan will take several minutes to determine if the local image needs repairing.
Repairing issues with DISM using RestoreHealth option
If there are issues, then you can use DISM with the RestoreHealth option, which will run an advanced scan and repair any problems automatically.
Open Start.
Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
Type the following command and press Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Quick note: While the command is running is normal to see the process stuck at 20 or 40 percent, after a few minutes, the process will complete successfully.
Once you complete the steps, the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool will connect to the Windows Update servers to download and replace any damaged files in the local image for Windows 10 as necessary.
If that does not fix your DISM image there is a much more detailed instructions to fix it, from Microsoft.
Hope this helps
Just to let everyone know, as of this morning TurboTax finally runs on my PC. This is after applying updates that were released sometime between yesterday and today. I imagint the latest downloads, if you are just getting started, should work as well. I can now begin a new return and open old returns without the program shutting down anymore.
I have applied all Windows updates and TurboTax updates and the program still does not work. What updates did you apply? Thanks
All I applied were the normal TurboTax updates that were available when it checked for updates when I started TurboTax. Nothing else, and it started working for the first time after 6 weeks or so of trying!
If your product still does not work after all of the updates, please feel free to contact Customer Support so you can speak with someone who can assist you.
Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, applying all the TurboTax updates has not solved the problem for me. I spent many hours with Customer service a week ago and will call again to see if they have a solution.
I spent an hour with Customer service. They sent me a SuperPatch to update TurboTax. Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem. They had no further ideas for helping resolve the issue. So I am back to square 1 with no solution in sight.
I wonder if the problem would go away if I installed TurboTax Premier rather than Home and Business. Any thoughts?
