You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.

Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed.  Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead.

What is the rejection code or rejection message?

If it was rejected for AGI—-your 2023 AGI might not be in the IRS system if you filed late.   Try using zero instead.

If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year.  The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

Here's how you can fix it:

Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button. Follow any “fix it” instructions to update the information causing the rejection.

Note: Not all rejections will have explicit guides to fix the information. You’ll need to navigate to the program area to address the cause of the rejection.

Time-saving Tip: If what you originally entered is correct, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, a dependent that's already been claimed, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return. This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.

IF I filed my 2024 taxes and it was rejected, why?

Continued to be rejected due to IRS claiming wife's AGI $ was incorrect.  IT IS/WAS TRULY CORRECT!?  Very frustrating.  Had to mail tax return; most likely will pay a penalty for late filing.  Has anyone else had this same problem?  I've used Turbo Tax for over 20 years; never had a problem.  Please help.  Thank you!

If what you entered is correct and you continue to get a reject, you won't be able to e-file. If you have tried the  correct AGI and you have tried using zero, and neither of those work, then print, sign and mail the return.    If it is a joint return, both spouses must sign and date the return.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
