Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I received an IRS notice. My SSN name and my TurboTax 2022 filing do not match because my middle name was shortened to the middle initial: Emily Marie to Emily M.

We have not processed your refund because the Social Security Number, or the IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and/or name shown on your tax return does not match our records or those of the Social Security Administration. You may have:
filed your tax return using a maiden, married or professional name that the Internal Revenue Service and/or the Social Security Administration does not have on record, or
misspelled your name or transposed your Social Security Number or IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

Look at your federal tax return Form 1040.  Does the name on the tax return and the Social Security number on the tax return match exactly the last name and the Social Security number entered on your current Social Security card?

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and on the section Your tax returns & documents.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

They don't match because TurboTax does not allow me to add a full name in the "middle initial" field and the IRS wants me to put the full name.

Maybe your IRS account has the middle name entered  with the first name and no middle name.

The IRS does not require a middle name on a federal tax return.  Look again at your Form 1040, it only requires Your first name and middle initial and Last name

TurboTax as well as all other tax preparation software companies are bound by IRS requirements when completing a tax return.  There is no IRS requirement to enter the Full Middle Name on a tax return.

If you entered on the tax return the exact same name and SSN as is on your Current SS card, then you need to contact the IRS to find out exactly what they are looking for concerning your name and Social Security number.

Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 3 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
