I never received a 1040 as I haven't worked for 2 years, but TurboTax won't let me e-file. Does everyone receive a 1040 even if unemployed?

You do not receive a 1040.  A Form 1040 is the form you send to the IRS when you file a tax return.  What are you trying to enter into the software?  You say you have not worked.   What income are you trying to enter?

A 1040 is the tax return form you prepare here to send to the IRS.   If you start entering data in this software you are preparing a Form 1040.   Please look at it so you will know what you are sending to the IRS:

Just to clarify, do you mean you never received a W2 because you did not work in 2022?

Form 1040 is the US individual tax form you’ll use to report info from last year for:

  • Income, deductions, and credits
  • Calculating your tax liability, if any
  • Calculating your refund, if any

Form W-2 is completed by an employer and contains important information that you need to complete your tax return. It reports your total wages for the year and the amount of federal, state, and other taxes withheld from your paycheck.
