Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my return now?” If you did that, you cannot do anything to fix it yet. The IRS will begin to accept/reject 2020 returns on Friday, February 12, 2021. You have to wait for the email that tells you if your return was accepted or rejected. If you do not see an email, check your spam folder.
You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.
If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.” The changes will go nowhere.
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and mail it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally. You will need to use a form called a 1040X. return.
Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
why do they keep rejecting my e file
You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.
Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed. Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead. What is the rejection code or rejection message?
If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2019 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2019 AGI might not be in the IRS system. Try using zero instead.
If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year. The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.
Or—-if you filed as a “non-filer” just to get the stimulus check on a 2019 return, try using $1 as the AGI.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.
I need to change a number in my efile

i just received 2021 e-file rejected by federal and state return and saw the review in Turbotax that i need to wait product release on March 18th that fix the calculation of the Form1116 carryover tax credits, then i can get the issues fixed and do the e-file again.
my question is about direct debit information that i provided in the original e-file for the tax payment. Since there will be re-calculation of tax , do i assume both the Debit Amount (tax payment due) and the Debit account Information both need to be re-entered again with this re e-file submission, OR , Will the "out-dated" tax payment amount in the rejected e-file still got deducted from my bank account .?
thank you.
Your rejected tax return will stay exactly the same until you make the appropriate changes. When your e-filed return comes back as rejected, it just means that the IRS has sent your return back to you for correction. To fix your reject, sign back in to TurboTax and follow the instructions to correct the error. Please see the information in this TurboTax FAQ here for assistance.
