I'm living in Japan and I can't put my Japanese phone number or zip-zip code into my info because Turbo Tax hasn't adjusted their program for it.

How do I post a foreign address and phone number on my return?

Go back to the Personal Info/My Info section, and go to where TurboTax wants your address.

On that screen, there is a box that says "U.S. Address" with a downward caret (for a pull-down menu). Click on the caret and choose "Foreign address". Now you will notice all the boxes in this section change, and you will be able to enter your Japanese address.

I would tell you where this box is on the screen, but the Online products do this much differently than the CD/download product - but both of them do have the facility to change to foreign address somewhere, just look carefully.

Hi,

I had already done what was told.  It won't give me the space to put my phone number.  I need to be able to put in my Japanese zip code.  This shouldn't be so difficult for a global giant like TURBO TAX.  So can you modify my tax form so it can accommodate a foreign zip code and phone number?

Thanks,

Jonas

Sorry to bother you again, but you need to fix this.  Your system won't let me file with the actual zipcode and I have put it in as a foreign country.  I want to put in my correct phone number and zip code.

You may have to use an address of a friend or relative who lives in the US.  The form may get fixed at some point, but probably not this tax season.

That's really the best Turbo Tax can do? After how many years of functioning as a tax filing system? Really!?

I am being honest.  You can work around the issue with a US address, use another tax program, or continue to wait for a fix that may not come.

You'll likely be able to ultimately efile using the foreign address shown on your return.  It may be that the underlying issue is actually triggered by something else that has a workaround.   But first, we need to know more about the error you are getting, because it may have a workaround.  Please answer these questions:

  • Are you going through the filing steps and getting an error message in regard to a "state and zip code"?  If so, where are you getting the message, and what is the exact error message?
  • Did you happen to purchase MAX Benefits by any chance?  If so, a "state and zip code" error for foreign filers may be triggered in regard to MAX.  If that's your problem, we can tell you more about a workaround.
  • I'll mention the phone issue below.

In My Info, in that mailing address section the phone number field will not accept a foreign telephone number.  When you try, it will automatically style like a USA number.  If you try to enter more digits, it'll probably say "invalid number".     I've seen TurboTax folks say in this forum it's because the IRS will not phone a foreign phone number if they need to contact you, but they will send mail to a foreign address.

As for the Japanese postal code, were you able to enter it successfully as illustrated in the 2 screens below? I don't know what the format of a Japanese postal code, but the field will accept a large number of characters.  The phone number field is lower down on that screen (you have to scroll down), but I think it will only take a USA style number.  If you try to enter more digits, it will say "invalid number."

NOTE:  Again, if you purchased MAX Benefits, and if you are receiving a "state and zip code" error message, your issue may be related to the consent form that product requires.   We can tell you more once we know more about your exact error message.  If you do have MAX, there are a couple of workarounds--an easy one (removal) if you haven't already paid, and a more-complicated one if you have already paid.
