Get your taxes done using TurboTax

@ jlblume8

You'll likely be able to ultimately efile using the foreign address shown on your return.  It may be that the underlying issue is actually triggered by something else that has a workaround.   But first, we need to know more about the error you are getting, because it may have a workaround.  Please answer these questions:

  • Are you going through the filing steps and getting an error message in regard to a "state and zip code"?  If so, where are you getting the message, and what is the exact error message?
  • Did you happen to purchase MAX Benefits by any chance?  If so, a "state and zip code" error for foreign filers may be triggered in regard to MAX.  If that's your problem, we can tell you more about a workaround.
  • I'll mention the phone issue below.

In My Info, in that mailing address section the phone number field will not accept a foreign telephone number.  When you try, it will automatically style like a USA number.  If you try to enter more digits, it'll probably say "invalid number".     I've seen TurboTax folks say in this forum it's because the IRS will not phone a foreign phone number if they need to contact you, but they will send mail to a foreign address.

As for the Japanese postal code, were you able to enter it successfully as illustrated in the 2 screens below? I don't know what the format of a Japanese postal code, but the field will accept a large number of characters.  The phone number field is lower down on that screen (you have to scroll down), but I think it will only take a USA style number.  If you try to enter more digits, it will say "invalid number."

NOTE:  Again, if you purchased MAX Benefits, and if you are receiving a "state and zip code" error message, your issue may be related to the consent form that product requires.   We can tell you more once we know more about your exact error message.  If you do have MAX, there are a couple of workarounds--an easy one (removal) if you haven't already paid, and a more-complicated one if you have already paid.
