IF you need a detailed answer...you're going to have to tell us which state's tax return you are asking about....because each state that has an income tax, has different forms for filing PY tax returns.
________
Generally though, when doing a Part-Year tax return for most states....you indicate what sub-portion of your yearly income was earned while living in that particular state...in the PY-column. So you check you records as to when exactly you moved....and total the income received, relative to when you were a resident in that state
Thank you so much! It is for the State of NY
It is telling me that nonresident period wages of 9759. cannot exceed total federal wages in Column A of 11234..
Wages,Salaries, Etc,Col B Its is 10.344
i'm lost in that part I'm not sur if I leave it like that.
You use NY software (or used to use it)...do you know what this issue is in the NY PY forms?
not having NY software, I can't see the forms, though I can guess at the issue.

The last time I filed in NY was 2019, I could possibly see if my desktop 2019 program will still open so I can look at the worksheet but that won't show me this person's error. Sometimes the error message is a little confused, or maybe there is a missing zero, hidden decimal point, or something else. The customer might have to contact customer service and do a screen share.
@rjs and @maglib are both listed in the SU spreadsheet as doing NY
(I imagine you could change yoru own State listed on the SU spreadsheet, to whatever one(s) you use now).
The 2019 might help though....if you have it.
I suspect, but can't know...that @Sheherazade57 has:
.....allocated a) NY wages as PY-Resident.... PLUS b) NY wages as non-resident...with such values that the total of the two exceeds Federal wages. But like I say, I don't know how the NY software flow presents the allocation selections.
@Sheherazade57 On the IT203 page 2, please review what is in the Fed vs. the NYS column.
When you went through the NY interview and chose to allocate wages which did you select for how to allocate your wages?
Then there is a section entitled Changes to Federal Income/ New Yorks addition and subtraction adjustments.
Did you at all override any forms as I'm unsure if you are using online or desktop version.
My only other concern would be when you entered your w-2. Often when you work in 1 state and live in another your employer gives you more then 1 w-2 for the same income. NY income is normally the same as Fed. Yet NJ income is higher as NJ does not allow healthcare nor 401k deductions in w-2 wages. You would only enter the w-2 once and put each state in.
Not sure I helped as we can not see what you see.
The NY interview is pretty short. Often it is easier to just remove it and start all over when you run into something strange.
Good luck.
Thank you all so much for taking the time to answear me I really appreciate it.
this is my first time trying to do it by myself thru the app but I think i'm going to give up the app and going to get it done by someone as the deadline approaching i need to get it done asap.
Thanks a lot for your help!
suggestion is to use the downloaded software as you then can see every form and drill down to where info comes from. Easiest version of the software.
Thank you!
