I haven't started working for them yet, but the employer wants me to submit a 1099 form to them for the contract work I'll be doing. What 1099 form to I fill for them?

I'm the contractor, and I need to send them a 1099 form, this is not me submitting to the IRS.  That will be during tax time in 2022.

As an independent contractor you do not give a Form 1099-MISC or Form 1099-NEC to your client.  They give you a Form 1099-NEC recording their payment to you for services rendered by you.

Please explain exactly what was requested by the client.

Perhaps a W-9 so that they will be able to issue a 1099-NEC "to" you at the end of the tax year?

You have it backwards.  If you are a contractor, the individual or business that you will perform work for will issue a 1099NEC to you.  They will likely ask you to fill out a W-9 that gives them your Social Security number or Tax ID so that they can pay you and report the amount they pay you to the IRS/

If you are an independent contractor, they do not withhold Social Security, Medicare or tax from your pay, so at tax time you pay it all yourself.  You enter the 1099 they issued to you on your tax return.  You may need to pay quarterly estimated tax payments to avoid a big tax bill or a penalty at tax time.
