I have section 8 and when I attempt to file my state taxes it creates a loop where it both wants and does not want line 5 or 6 left blank. How do I resolve this?

I had this same problem last year. I don't know how they fixed it. I am attempting to list how much I pay VS how much the state pays. No matter how I try to revise things it will not accept the answer.

What state are you preparing?

Michigan. Sorry I thought I'd included that.

Could you clarify what VS is and we'll try to duplicate your issue.

VS as in versus, sorry I'm used to capitalizing it. I'm trying to put in what I pay personally and the overall amount paid because as far as I can tell on the form they want to know total rent and what part of that the state pays. Which makes sense.

Ultimately I spent between one and two hours on the phone with someone this Monday. I not only tried clearing cache but tried two other browsers. The problem seems to be a coding issue. It both wants and does not want a figure put on both line 5 and 6. Because line 5 is total income, but line 6 is for if you get section 8. I never had this problem before so I have to assume this is ultimately where it's hanging up and I don't feel comfortable lying about getting section 8 just to make the program work.

Basically I can't file my taxes until this coding issue is updated, and if it isn't fixed on the 30th as the kind woman on the phone suggested, I'll be going with a competitor suggested by an accountant acquaintance. I did a screen share and ran though every possible permutation of what 'should' be done to fix it and ultimately the only possible answer the three people involved could come up with was that it's a backend problem.

If someone has a suggestion that'd be great. But ultimately it just seems to be a rather gaping bug nobody has noticed or fixed. Not sure how. That's just the only remaining answer.

No, only enter the amount of rent you paid.  You can't get credit for rent paid by someone else.

If you live in Section 8 housing and a portion of your rent is paid by MSHDA, or any government agency, you may claim your portion of the rent that you actually paid.

Here's more info on Renter's Credit for Section 8.

I attempted to put in just the amount I pay and leave the rest blank.

I attempted over half a dozen permutations.

Then the people on the phone had me try them again.

No matter what I do, the program has the same error, and it seems to be a backend issue. Because it wants to know my rent amount paid while a full time resident but no matter how I fill the form out with the requested information it comes back with the same error.

Make sure you indicated your Residence Status for Michigan in the Personal Info section, and that your household income does not exceed the limits for the credit.

The MI-1040 CR Form only asks the amount of rent you paid, and the credit is 23% of that amount.  What is the error message you are receiving?

If you couldn't resolve your issue after speaking with TurboTax Support, you could Clear & Start Over.  I haven't seen other posts with this issue this year, so that may be your best option.

That doesn't look like the form I'm having a problem with.

The form it's catching me on says "Property tax information worksheet" on the top of it.

The error is that it says it wants my rent information on both Line 5 and line 6 of the form, but if I do fill both out it says line 6 should be blank. But when I leave it blank it fills out again, and that just keeps repeating.

I tried just redoing the whole thing to make line 5 blank and line 6 filled out, but that didn't seem to work either and ended up doing the same thing.

Worse still I had the same problem last year.
