Same here! In my case, I think it is because I had Independent Contractor work so it isn't your typical W2 income. In which case it converts you to their self employment tax prep package which is normally $89!  It didn't give me the option to pay the fees using my refund as in prior years either.

So, If you did any gig work or IC work for which you received a form 1099-NEC it may have converted you to that " self employed" package as well .

Thank you Wlfac50

but my situation is different. my charge was for turbotax upgrade that should not have been implemented.

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY?  I WANT THE FREE EDITION

The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now.  Thanks to the new tax laws that began for 2018 returns, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's.  Everything goes on a Form 1040 that has three extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition.  Using the standard deduction instead of itemizing does NOT mean you will not need any of those schedules.https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/4511011-what-happened-to-the-1040a-and-1040ez   If you started in the Free Edition and entered any data that required any of those three schedules, you have to upgrade to a paid version and if you are watching the screens carefully you are alerted to the upgrade.

When you chose to “start”  in the Free Edition —

Directly below the words “Free Edition” there is a blue link that says “For simple tax returns only”   If you click that link it brings up this information:

You can file with TurboTax Free Edition if you have a simple tax return.*

*A simple tax return is Form 1040 only.

Situations covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • W-2 income
  • Limited interest and dividend income reported on a 1099-INT or 1099-DIV
  • Claiming the standard deduction
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC)
  • Child tax credits
  • Student Loan Interest deduction

Situations not covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • Itemized deductions
  • Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G
  • Business or 1099-NEC income
  • Stock sales
  • Rental property income
  • Credits, deductions and income reported on schedules 1-3

Or—-Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free.  There are 8  free software versions available from the IRS Free File site

https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/

If your TurboTax fees are higher than expected, you can reduce them by removing add-ons:

I just watched your turbotax commercial where they said FREE  17 times and the text on the screen and

the screen  said free twice.

I feel that this implies there will be no charge ???

YOU ARE MISLEADING PEOPLE !!!

This is a user community forum, not a direct route to TurboTax Support.   I'll tell you how to phone TurboTax Support below, and I will also give you a link if you want to express a complaint to TurboTax Corporate about their advertising/marketing.

TurboTax Customer Support hours are 5AM-9PM Pacific (8AM-12 Midnight Eastern) 7 days/week.

FAQ: What is the TurboTax phone number?
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number/00/25632

If you want to reach the folks at TurboTax Corporate (Intuit), you can go to the page at this link:

https://www.intuit.com/company/executives/

Just below the page's large title, you'll see a screen-wide blue banner that prominently says:

"Do you have a question, concern, or feedback about an Intuit product or service?"

There is a "Send an email" link with an arrow.  It goes to a designated person in the office of the president of Intuit, and they supposedly will assign it to the right team for review.

NOTE:  Do NOT send any sensitive personal info since that is regular email--not secure email.

I've just left you another comment in this thread on how you can speak to the folks at TurboTax Support and/or TurboTax Corporate (Intuit).

The Free Edition is only for very simple returns that do not require one of Schedules 1-3.   Any item that requires one of those schedules requires an upgrade.
