You will need to have the 2018 TurboTax product installed on your computer to open a .tax file.
Please see this TurboTax FAQ for more information:

See this TurboTax support FAQ for amending a 2018 tax return originally completed and filed using TurboTax - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/how-do-i-amend-a-return-in-turbotax/01/27579
I have a similar problem. But the 2018 file only has *.tax as the suffix NOT *.tax2018 (home & business version). Wondering if adding the 2018 will work???
Are you on a Mac? I think it might not show the whole extension. Where did you get the .tax file? Did you use the online version or the Desktop program? If you still have the 2018 program installed see if you can open the file. Then save it again, go to File-Save As and give it a new name and watch where it saves it.
My turbotax 2018 program is on a retired computer. I purchased the CD but cannot find it. I just need to view a 2018 return to see what my filing status was. I didn't save a pdf.
We do not save anyone's tax file.
I had the 2018 CD, used it last year, no longer have that laptop or the disk. Apparently I only saved the .tax2018 version of my taxes and not the .pdf. The link above takes me to 2019 software. Will this work if I install 2019 software onto my new laptop...will I be able to open the .tax2018 file?

No. You must use 2018 software to open a *.tax2018 data file. Phone Customer Support and tell them your dilemma, and they'll likely place a 2018 program download for you.
Use the form at the link below to schedule a call back, or it may provide a number. Where the form asks what product you are using, be sure in the dropdown menu to indicate "CD/download" and the proper operating system, then indicate which Edition.

Oh, one other thing. I told you above how to reach Customer Support to ask for a 2018 program download. But are you by any chance an Advantage member with an annual subscription? If so, there should be a 2018 download already in your Advantage account. Advantage members have a complimentary download even if they bought the CD. If so, then look here:
Sign in to your TurboTax & scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.
Click Show, on the right & click Download/print return (PDF).
Select Something else.
Don't BS here or you will get kicked out & have to sign back in again, type something like: Need to verify if/how my Form 8606 was filed.
Click Download my return.
It will ask: What do you want to do with (1) (700KB)?
Click SAVE. Then click Open folder.
Right-click the file named (1) & select Rename. Retype the filename to your choosing but CHANGE THE EXTENSION TO .pdf
open with Edge or Adobe.
I bought the Turbo Tax 2018 software and used it to prepare and file the return. Unfortunately, I did not save a PDF file of the return and now I want to print it for my records. How do I do this?

Do you still have 2018 installed and have the .tax2018 file on your computer? Just open your return and save it as a pdf or print it now.
