If you didn't pay any AMT taxes and your return doesn't have form 6251 then why are you looking for a number that doesn't exist ?
Because Turbo Tax Premier is asking me to confirm data it pulled from my 2018 return!
Just to make sure I understand. TurboTax pulled AMT numbers from your 2018 return, but maybe you don't have a copy to verify those numbers? Since it appears you filed using TurboTax last year you should be able to see that return in your account. Either way, TurboTax will pull the numbers that are on the forms for 2018. If you filed with TurboTax and nothing, was carried over then you are good to go.
Thank you for the reply.
Yes - I filed with TuroTax last year and for the past 20 or so years. Once my return is complete, I save a PDF version of the return both as the actual return and with all forms and worksheets. I have never needed to pay the AMT. This year when the program checks for the AMT requirement, it pulls an amount from the 2018 return and requests confirmation. Form 6251 is not in either PDF file from 2018 and the amount does not match any figure on my Form 1040.
Since you have never needed to pay AMT, you are correct, the number being pulled into 2019 is not applicable. If it cannot be deleted or the amount otherwise declined, you have mainly three options.
Option 1: Delete Form 6251 by following these steps:
Option 2: Re-do 2019 completely
Option 3: Please post here if the problem persists. If you send us a ".tax2019" file, we can dig deeper into the issue. By sending us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information, we can see more specifically what is happening on your return. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:
On your menu bar at the very top, click “Online” and then “Send Tax File to Agent”. When you click to send, you will get a pop-up with a token number. Reply with the token number and I’ll be able to open a TurboTax Business file with your numbers but not your personal information. That may help diagnose the issue.
Thank you for being a legacy customer with TurboTax! We are happy to help.
I don't have a Form 6251 on my 2020 return. TurboTax says it got information from that form, but no such form is in my records. How do I find the AMT income?
Why is TT asking for info from my 2020 Form 6251 when there is no such form in my copy of my return? Also, I do not recall paying Altermative Minimum Tax.
Form 6251 Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), is used to determine the amount of alternative minimum tax (AMT) that a taxpayer may owe. If you don't have form 6251 and you didn't pay any AMT, you can delete the form.
Delete Form 6251 by following these steps:
Hi, I am doing my 2022 taxes and bumped into this thread.....I have identical issue - My 2021 taxes done thru turbo tax (saved as PDF) does not contain form 6251!
Here is the screenshot. What is interesting is that there is a link for help "What if I don't have 6251?" - The screenshot shows the contents of the help screen as well. It suggest enter 1040 Line 10 amount - Is this a typo? Because the amount that turbo tax picked up ($38,553) is actually 1040 (2021) line 11 - adjusted Gross income (not line 10).
My questions:
Thank you
No. It is not a typo. “2021 Form 1040, 10” refers to line 10 of 2021 Form 6251 which directs you (for 2022) to:
Add Form 1040 or 1040-SR, line 16 (minus any tax from Form 4972), and Schedule 2 (Form 1040), line 2.
Subtract from the result Schedule 3 (Form 1040), line 1, and any negative amount reported on Form 8978, line 14 (treated as a positive number). If zero or less, enter -0-. If you used Schedule J to figure your tax on Form 1040 or 1.
If your adjusted gross income is $38,553 and you have none of the adjustments listed on the help screen then you do not have AMT.
The AMT exemption for 2022 tax is $75,900 for individuals, $59,050 for married couples filing separately, and $118,100 for married couples filing jointly or qualifying widow(er).
Delete Form 6251.
Thank you.
My current status:
I closed TurboTax and started it again! Voila - this time it did not ask me form 6521 --- everything went very smooth and I completed my returns.
I have the same issue. I filed by taxes as Married by a financial service company and I am filing as Single this year on Turbo Tax (I divorced last year). I am asked for Form 6251, line 4 Alternative minimum taxable income, I don't have a 6251 from 2021. And should I follow what Turbo Tax advised below to get the AMTI??
"Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR, Line 15, plus your standard deduction (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR, line 12a) from 2021"?
Yes, you can follow the steps TurboTax is showing to enter information from your 2021 return since you didn't file with TurboTax.
See this TurboTax tips article for more information about the Alternative Minimum Tax and the different income items that can require TurboTax to calculate a separate AMT amount.
