How can I start my 2021 simple tax return (free filing with turbo tax) after October 17 but plan to submit/efile before October 31, 2022? Turbo tax won't let me start?

The TurboTax online 2021 editions will be shutting down after October 31, 2022 to make way for the 2022 editions.  A new 2021 tax return using the online editions cannot be started after October 17, 2022.

A 2021 tax return using TurboTax can now only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed.

To complete and file a 2021 tax return using TurboTax you would need to purchase and download one of the 2021 desktop editions from this website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/

It is too late to e-file a 2021 return using online TurboTax.

If you have waited too long to e-file and do not have a printer then you have to problem-solve your own printer issue and figure out where/how to print your tax return, since the only way to file it is by mail.

I DO NOT HAVE A PRINTER—WHAT CAN I DO?

We cannot solve your printer problem for you  TurboTax cannot print it for you.   If you do not have a working printer,  you can access your account from any computer that has internet access and print your return. Or save it to a flash drive.   Perhaps you need to see if a friend or relative can let you print from a computer with a printer.  Or print it at a UPS place or Staples, etc.

@juliaelder Today -- November 17, 2022-- is the LAST DAY that you can use that Free File site to prepare or e-file a 2021 tax return.   After today, the only way to file a 2021 tax return will be to print it, sign it and mail it in an envelope.

You cannot start a 2021 tax return on the TurboTax site at all.   The only way to use TurboTax now to prepare a 2021 tax return is by using the CD/download software on a full PC or Mac.

@juliaelder232  You can not do 2021 online using Turbo Tax at all.  

Sorry it's too,late to start a 2021 online return or use the mobile app, either on Turbo Tax or the IRS. And too late to efile 2021.  If you need to start 2021 you can buy the Desktop download here,

Don’t forget your state.  And you will have to print and mail your returns.  So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

Then when you file for 2022 you need to enter 0 for the 2021 AGI since you are filing 2021 late.

You have 3 years to file if you are getting a refund.
