Line 30 of Form 1040 is the Recovery Rebate Credit. Eligible individuals who did not receive the full amounts of both Economic Impact Payments may claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2020 Form 1040 or 1040-SR. To determine whether you are an eligible individual or the amount of your Recovery Rebate Credit, complete the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet in the Instructions for Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR.
Here is how to complete the information to populate Line 30:
There is no accounting for dependents. If you complete the actual worksheet provided by the IRS we should have received 2900 for the first and 1800 for the second we did not receive any stimulus for our daughter born in 2004
Once you enter all of your information, including your dependents' information, the Recovery Rebate Credit form will show the amount you should have received. Once you enter in the amount you actually received, the difference at the bottom of the page will be the amount you will receive as a Recovery Rebate Credit.
We already were paid stimulus, answered the questions in TurboTax and now cannot delete claiming credit to which we are not entitled.
You can go back and re-answer the questions, but the program should calculate the credit from your answers.
Do you have any special circumstances?
Such as a recent passing or children you share custody of?
TO GET TO THE STIMULUS SECTION OF TURBOTAX:
Go into your account and click "Tax Home"
On that screen click "Other Tax Situations"
When the drop-down opens, click "Let's Get Started" or "Review/Edit" to move forward
There may be a delay when opening to this next screen
Scroll to the bottom of this screen and click "Let's keep going"
The next screen should read "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount" (If not, click continue to move forward until you do get to that screen)
Scroll down and click "Continue"
The next screens will ask if you received the stimulus, which ones and how much.
The software will calculate a credit if applicable.
My son was born on March 25,2020 and my wife nor I received any stimulus checks for my son as he wasn't included on the previous tax return, how do i add that to this year tax return?
Go back to My Info and make sure you said your baby lived with you the WHOLE YEAR and not just the number of months. Even a baby was born on Dec 31 is considered to live with you the whole year. You might have to delete the baby and re add him. Pay attention to the questions, especially the one asking if he paid more than half of his support.
Hi
We are filing jointly. We received a stimulus check on 4/15/20 of 2,400.00. We received the second stimulus check on 1/4/2021 of 1,200.00. I was unsure when asked by Turbo Tax software if I should include the second check because it was deposited in 2021. Because I did not it assumed and added 1,200.00 rebate on line 30. Is this correct?
No. A payment you got in January or February 2021 is an Advance and based on your 2020 return. Enter the second Stimulus payment on your 2020 return now. The year you got it doesn't matter. If you don't report it Turbo Tax will give it to you again, which would be wrong and double. The Stimulus entry screen even says the second one is between Dec 2020 and Jan 2021 so you should include any payments you received in January and February.
So you did it wrong. We don't know how the IRS will handle that and adjust your refund.
You are the most helpful! Thanks Volvogirl!
My disk copy of turbo tax did not allow access to line 30 of my 1040 form. What to do?
To claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on line 30 you will need to answer the stimulus questions in the interview. If you do not qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit then the questions will not come up.
To be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit you need to be a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2020 and have a Social Security number that is valid for employment.
You cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else to be eligible.
Your credit amount will be reduced if your 2020 adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than:
Your payment will be reduced by 5% of the amount by which your AGI exceeds the applicable threshold above. (IRS FAQ Recovery Rebate Credit )
To claim the credit in TurboTax, please follow these steps:
so if I got stimulas money they take that from you they 2800.00 out of my balance owed to me why

If you received the 3rd stimulus payment then you are not eligible to receive the Recovery Rebate Credit. You cannot get both as that would be double-dipping.
So nothing has changed on your tax return.
