Hi, I am ready to File but the systems is not letting me File since I have not added the State and Zip Code. But I live outside the U.S. that is why I added foreignadress

Go back to the screen where you entered your address. Delete all the address information that you entered. Just above the space for street address there is a pull-down list that says "U.S. Address." Click the little arrow to open the list, and select Foreign Address. Then you will be able to enter your foreign address without a state and zip code.

The problem I am having is when I go to e-file and submit my final Review, I receive a message saying:

Your transmission didn't go through
We could not e-file your return for the following reason:
The Intuit Electronic Filing System is having difficulty recognizing the data in the return you are sending. To ensure you have the latest version of TurboTax, wait 24 hours to update your program automatically.

What should I do next? because I tried by mail as well and the same message appeared

If you are getting a "state and zip code" error, did you purchase MAX benefits by any chance?

No I just payed for TurboTax Deluxe version. If I am ready to file my taxes...why would I need to get the MAX version?

I didn't say you "need" to buy it. I merely asked you if you DID purchase it "by any chance" since there is a known issue for foreign users who did purchase MAX.  By the way MAX is not a version, it is an add-on package of optional features--Audit Defense, identity monitoring/restoration, etc.  If you didn't buy it, then simply ignore the above; it doesn't apply to you.

Did you happen to enter a USA address in the MY INFO section previously, such as in order to be able to pay by a USA credit card, and then you subsequently switched it to "foreign address" type prior to filing?     If so, there may be remnants of a USA address persisting in the background.   Try this to clear that address section:

  • Go back to the MY INFO section, and select edit next to your mailing address.
  • Change the type of address dropdown box back to "USA".
  • Check all the fields and be sure there are no remnants of any USA entries there, such as a city name or something.   If there are any entries, delete them.
  • Then change the "type" dropdown back to "foreign address."
  • Once the foreign address fields appear again, then enter your foreign address.
  • Then try to efile.

@ dag5209

Or here's another possibility that is common among foreign filers:

Read the entire error message you are getting carefully.   Is the following error code buried in it somewhere?   i.e., on the screen that tells you that your transmission did not go through are you also seeing an error that has the following in it (or similar)?

601ERRV:5, CustHdr_17 - ?:? - Invalid SMS Number. Contains invalid digits

If so, we can tell you the workaround for that.

Yes that is what shows up when I try to file. How could I do the workaround on that?

Thanks for your help.

OK.  That particular 601ERRV problem is not with the foreign address. It is with a phone number.

If you also have a phone number listed in your Intuit Account settings (Intuit profile), then you must make sure you use a valid 10-digit USA phone number in both your Intuit Account settings and in your return.  "Invalid SMS number" in the error message implies it has something to do with text messaging.

See if this FAQ helps:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/bugs-and-error-messages/help/why-am-i-getting-601errv-5-custhdr-17...

See the answer by TurboTax DawnC in the thread linked below, who says not to use a virtual number like Google Voice, Skype, etc.  in the Intuit Account settings, at least not until after you successfully efile.   She also says it may be possible to leave the phone number blank in the Intuit Account settings, and a couple of users said that worked for them.  But if there is one there in the Account Settings, it has to be a valid USA phone number.

Also see this other thread with many other out-of-country users with the same 601ERRV problem who were able to correct the error.  If you have trouble, post there, and they can probably help you.

If the problem recurs, also see the ADDENDUM in my next comment below.

Hi, I am ready to File but the systems is not letting me File since I have not added the State and Zip Code. But I live outside the U.S. that is why I added foreignadress

ADDENDUM:

A couple of users have said that after making changes to the phone in the Intuit Account, the efile problem still happened, until they logged out of TurboTax then logged back in. This reset is likely more important if a user removed the phone number from their Account in order to efile.

So if you make any changes in your Intuit Account phone settings, after you save the settings, log out of TurboTax and close the browser.   Then reopen it and log back in and try to efile.

If you removed your Intuit Account phone number in order to efile, you can go back and put it back in after you successfully efile.

Hi I removed the phone number from my account and left the US phone number under "My info". The same problem exists: The Intuit Electronic Filing System is having difficulty recognizing the data in the return you are sending. To ensure you have the latest version of TurboTax, wait 24 hours to update your program automatically. If you still can't transmit your return, go to www.support.turbotax.com for a solution or workaround. In some cases, you may need to file your return by mail. -  - Invalid SMS Number. Must be between 10 and 10 digits.

A couple of users with that error have said that even after making changes to the phone in the Intuit Account or removing it, the efile problem still happened, until they logged out of TurboTax then logged back in.   I don't know if you did that or not.

One user who removed his phone number from Intuit Account said he tried efiling multiple times then it suddenly and unexplainedly went through.  I suspect it was because he had closed and  logged in several times.

I'd log out, empty your browser Internet cache, and delete any Intuit-related cookies.   Close the browser, reopen it, then go to Online TurboTax and try to efile again.

If you've done that a couple of times, and nothing is different, I have nothing else to suggest, but you can post in the other thread below where many foreign users who have this problem have successfully resolved it.     Read the solutions they have used in order to proceed.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/taxes/discussion/my-federal-e-file-is-not-going-through-i-m-given-...

If they can't help you solve it, we can tell you how to phone TurboTax Support--IF you can phone 800 numbers from your country (won't be toll-free from outside USA.)   If you can't phone the USA 800 numbers, we can tell you how to reach TurboTax through Twitter or Facebook.

Hi, yes if you could provide me the phone number so I can contact TurboTax that would be very helpful. Since I already tried removing the phone number from the intuit account and shut down the computer and still the error when I am trying to efile still shows up.

Have you scrolled through and read the reports from foreign filers about their solutions in this other thread linked below?

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/taxes/discussion/re-my-federal-e-file-is-not-going-through-i-m-giv...

Some in that thread have had success removing the number from the Intuit Account, although some like you continued to get the error.   Some have temporarily used a trusted friend's or relative's USA domestic number in the Intuit Account Settings.  According to TurboTax and to some user reports in that thread, you do not have to verify the number; i.e., you do not have to tick the box to send an SMS.  In other words, while the number in the Intuit Account must be a valid verifiable US domestic number, you don't actually have to verify it.  I guess it can somehow tell what is a valid USA number.    Then after the efiling, they removed the temporary phone number from the Intuit Account.

If still unsuccessful, post in that thread, explain what all you've tried, and one of them might suggest something.

Here is the phone number for TurboTax Support on Monday.  Be aware it likely won't be toll-free when calling it from overseas, so charges can add up in you are on-hold.  1-800-4INTUIT (1-800-446-8848.)

Support hours are 5AM-5PM Pacific (8AM-8PM Eastern), Mon-Fri

Or use this contact form to be assigned an incident number and specific phone number.

If you use this form, for the issue just say something like 601ERRV5 SMS Error prevents efiling from foreign country without quotes.
