I'm not sure why the IRS used the address from his childhood home. They typically send any correspondence to the address used on the latest tax return filed.
If your confirmation letter was forwarded to his mom's new address, the check should also be forwarded.
If you have already filed your tax return, you should make sure your address is updated with the IRS to avoid any issues in the future.
You can go to the following link and update your information with the IRS directly.
My current address is [removed address]

What is it you're wanting to do? The IRS goes by the address on the latest return--unless you notify them of a change. Did your address change after you filed your return? If so, see this IRS page on how to notify the IRS of an address change. Several methods are outlined.

If you need to update your address in your TurboTax Account, log in and go to the left menu column. Scroll way down that column and choose the tab "Intuit Account" to get to account settings. Making an address change in your TurboTax profile does NOT notify the IRS of the new address. You have to notify the IRS yourself (see link in paragraph above.)
