Since the state has the information and are the ones in charge of the debit, you are not at fault if there is an issue with the timing of the debit. However, you do want to make sure it gets paid so your plan to check is a good one.
Can someone share the Turbotax number to call? I filed my taxes on APRIL 16 and received confirmation of the filing. I had payment set up with my bank account, just like Federal. It is now April 23, and I have not received confirmation of a debit from my bank. I want to call Turbotax to confirm it was submitted.

TurboTax will not be able confirm a payment. The bank information for direct debit from your bank account would have been sent with the state tax return that was e-filed. The State debits your account based on the information you entered.
You can see how you chose to pay the state taxes owed on the State Filing Instructions page for the state tax return. Use Print Center.
To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/
When you sign onto your online account and land on the Tax Home web page, scroll down and click on Add a state.
This will take you back to the 2021 online tax return.
Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Then click on Print Center. Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return. Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets
I'm in the same boat. I efiled on 4/17 with the direct debit. and nothing has hit my bank. I checked the Missouri website today and it indicates they have processed my return, but have received no payment. Plus they've assessed a $50+ nonpayment penalty.
Follow the instructions in the post above yours and CHECK on how you indicated you would pay the state balance due ... read them carefully because some state balance dues could not be set up in the TT program with filing and the program would have told you the options you had to make a payment timely.
If you DID set up the direct debit and the state return was accepted for processing on time then eventually the state will get around to completing the payment requested. If they get delayed then you have the proof that the debit was timely requested in case they do send you a penalty letter.
To @Critter-3 and @DoninGA : TurboTax (at least for Missouri) has a bug, apparently. Even if you do select online payment, TurboTax tells you to print out a sheet and mail payment to the State! There is no way to determine whether TurboTax actually filed your payment or not. And, if no debit is taken from your account, the only way to find out whether the app did what it said it did without calling TurboTax.
@bfranciskato and @lh77 : I called a phone number that was in my CD packet; however, a contact phone number listed online at TurboTax here is [phone number removed].
I set for my payment to come out on 4/15, as Missouri was requiring earlier payment than Federal (4/18). TurboTax support confirmed that my app did e-file payment; then Missouri finally took the payment from my account on 4/23.
Note: Missouri's website (not the payment one) says that they'll not charge you late fees or finance charges until your payment is 30 days late (5/15 that would be). Other States might charge you if, indeed, TurboTax didn't efile your payment - or, as @Critter-3 noted, you didn't actually select to e-file your payment.
Please do check your TurboTax app to ensure you selected e-file for your State before calling TurboTax support. And, if by some accident of fate, you actually selected to mail your payment, contact your State (info on that State's website, not TurboTax's website), tell them what happened, and set up a payment as they direct (outside of TurboTax).
Good luck everyone!!!
direct debit finally posted at bank on 4/25
the direct debit finally hit my bank on 4/25. MO website still not updated though. Guess I'll just sit tight until or unless I hear something. MO has my email address.
I still have not had the debit hit my account. The state website says it will accept payments from your software, but I have a tax advisor who says otherwise. I hope that it is just a matter of time and that all is well but it is very frustrating not to be able to find out. Can't tell if there was an issue with Turbo Tax or the State is just incredibly behind.
If you're talking about Missouri, @paul-ince , then yes, the State *will* take e-payment via TurboTax. Several people in this forum have proved that!
- If you selected to e-pay via bank debit in TurboTax, regardless of your State, and nothing has come out of your account yet, then call the TurboTax support number . The support agent will check to see if TurboTax actually sent the instructions to your State. The agent cannot tell you what your State is doing with the payment instructions or when the State will retrieve the money from your account - only that TurboTax did what it was supposed to do.
- If the support agent says TurboTax did the right thing, then you just have to wait for the State to take the money - or find your State's tax office phone number or website and determine your tax return status that way. Either way, TurboTax has done its part and can do nothing more.
- If you are doing Missouri taxes and did NOT select to e-pay via bank debit in TurboTax, then you'll need to go to Pay Individual Income Taxes Online and pay your Missouri taxes there via bank debit or credit/debit card. Otherwise, you'll have to find out where to make payment for your State.
Just replying to say that I used the desktop download to file for 2022 after several years of online only. I don't think TurboTax online offered me a chance to efile with Missouri, although apparently it's been an option for a couple of years, based on this thread. I could have avoided mailing vouchers for some time, and apparently incorrectly assumed it was MO's fault 😄 I set up the debit as well, and then still got the message that although I've efiled, I must print and mail, with the document indicated being the payment voucher. Unfortunate that TT has not corrected this yet. I will not be mailing the payment, but watching my bank account for the debit around the indicated date.
Open your return ... switch to the FORMS mode and look at the state filing instruction page to see how you choose to file and pay the state return. You can also click on FILE then print and save a PDF of the return to review the same information.
This is my mini version of a tutorial that should be in the downloaded program:
Forms Mode lets you view and make changes to your tax forms "behind the scenes."
If you're adventurous, you can even prepare your return in Forms Mode, but we don't recommend it. You may miss obscure credits and deductions you qualify for, and you may forget to report things that will come back and haunt you later.
Forms Mode is exclusively available in the TurboTax CD/Download software. It is not available in TurboTax Online.
If you want to play around with different figures and tax scenarios without affecting your original return you can ….
Once you have filed successfully … you can shut off the auto updater function and then save the return & .taxfile.
For Windows, up in the top menu, you can set the "Updater Preferences" to "Always Ask" or more commonly set to "I don't have an internet connection" (even if you do), and then you are not forced to update....and can manually force an update when you choose to do so. And then you can open the file(s) at any time with no forced upgrade.
But that's the Windows software.....not a MAC. For a MAC you cannot turn off the auto updater HOWEVER you can simply disconnect from the internet before opening the tax return.
It's always a good idea to make a backup copy of your tax data file, in case your original gets lost or corrupted. Here's how:
If you make changes to your original tax return file, repeat these steps to ensure your original and backup copies are in-synch.
AND save it as a PDF so you have access to a copy even if you don’t have the program still installed and operational :
AND protect the files :
*** Other clues to the downloaded program ***
In the forms mode ... double click or right click on a box on a form to data source it ... sadly it doesn't work on all boxes.
When you look at an onscreen tax form using Forms Mode, you might wonder why one figure is blue and the one next to it is red or black.
These colors indicate the source of that data.
Color | Meaning |
Blue | You entered this data, either in the interview or Forms Mode. |
Black | The program entered this data or calculated this amount. |
Red | This data has either been overridden or is invalid (for example, a ZIP code that doesn't exist). |
Red italics | You marked this amount as estimated. |
Black italics | The program calculated this amount from an amount you marked as estimated. |
Purple | This information has supporting details. |
Aquamarine | This data was transferred over from last year. |
Green | This data was imported from Quicken or QuickBooks. |
Yellow fields (Windows) | Yellow fields allow user input. Anything you enter here shows up in blue. |
PRIOR YEAR USE OF A SUPPORTING DETAILS WORKSHEET :
If you find you have a $0 in an entry field that cannot be changed … this issue is almost always one in which you used a "Supporting Details" (SD) sheet in that field in the prior year. What happens is that when you transfer in the prior year's data, the SD sheet is transferred too, but empty...and that causes the $0 to show up in many areas of the Step-by-Step mode interview....wherever the SD sheet was used before.
But when switching to Forms Mode, when you try to enter a $$ amount in a field where the SD sheet is attached, the SD sheet will pop up immediately, and you can either enter the $$ amount on that sheet, or delete the SD sheet entirely and avoid future issues (unless you really want the SD sheet)
Sometimes, when you see the $0 in Step-by-Step, you can just
I too efiled this year and received the request for a Missouri voucher.
Turbo Tax people, is it a problem that Missouri needs to help you with or is it a problem you can handle and just can't find time for?
This problem is creating a lot of confusion. If you can't solve it, then let us know whether we should worry about it or just forget. You could update the software.
It appears this problem has existed for at least a year.
I entered my bank account information with the Missouri e-filing step, and it auto-filled the date to be April 15 2023. Turbo Tax still made me print out a payment voucher, saying I have to mail in my payment.
Will the payment in fact be deducted from my bank account? What happens if I mail a check AND the amount is deducted? How quickly would I get my refund?
If you entered your banking information, then presumably Missouri will know to debit your account for the amount you owe in state taxes, there is no need to send in the payment voucher along with it. You may check periodically with your bank to see if the money was already debited from your account. If not, then visit the Mo Dept. of Taxation HERE to check status.
