Do you still have dependent children at home?

2/17 meaning...Feb 2017?  Or Feb 17, 2018 or 2019?

In the year that a spouse passes away, you can still file a joint return so that you get the standard deduction for a married couple.

If you have dependent children still living at home, you will be able to file as a qualified widow for the next two years after that tax return and get that same standard deduction.
