Are you using the Desktop CD/Download installed program OR the Online version? Some people who buy the Desktop program accidentally end up in the Online version. You can not apply the Desktop purchase to the Online version. If that happened to you post back.
Are you asking about the fee to efile state? There is a lot of confusion about this. For the Desktop version it's a free download of one state PROGRAM, not returns filed. You can prepare unlimited federal and unlimited state returns. Some people need to file in more than one state so they have to buy another state program. You can print and mail the state for free or each state return including the first one is $20 early or 25 to efile. Check the box or online description. It should say Federal + Efile + State. Not state efile.
There is no fee to e-file your return when you use online TurboTax software. The fee is the same whether you e-file the return or mail it in an envelope.
If you choose to pay your TurboTax fees by having the fees deducted from your federal refund instead of paying upfront using a credit card before you file, you incur a "refund processing fee" of $39--or $45 if you are in CA. The fee is NOT for e-filing-----it is for using a third party bank to receive your refund, extract your fees to pay TT, and send you the rest.
If you use desktop software---the CD/download----you have to pay a fee to e-file a state return. If you print and mail the state return instead of e-filing it, you can avoid the state e-file fee and just pay for a stamp and an envelope. The desktop software includes the software for preparing the state return. E-filing the return is what causes the extra state e-file fee. Before March 1, the state e-file fee is $20; after March 1 the state e-file fee increases to $25.
Just my 2 cents here.
I purchased the desktop version online and it will cost me $20-$25 dollars to efile my State (Indiana) electronically through TurboTax.
So to future buyers of the Desktop versoin.... When you see that price on Amazon, or wherever you purchase TurboTax from..... remember to add another $20-25 to that total.... because that is what it is going to ultimately cost you to E-FILE your state return.
Also.... it's not the STATE's that are requiring this... it is TURBOTAX that is charging you this fee!!!!!!!!
At least that is my understanding.
I would print and mail mine in on paper for free.... but I figure I will get my refund faster with E-File.
