Can I still recover rebate?

I filed my 2020 taxes early and received in March 2020. At the time, I was not aware of line 30, recovery rebate for dependant Myrakle F Carter. I did not receive the first 2 stimulus payments for her. Why wasn't it calculated through TurboTax automatically? How will I go about getting rebate? It should have been included in the Pop up stimulus payments, but was, is not. Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated. Thank you

If you did not receive your first and/or second stimulus payment or if the amount received is not correct, you can claim it on your 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit.

You'll need to amend your return to include the Recovery Rebate Credit.

  • To avoid unnecessary delays, do not amend until your original return has been fully processed.
  • You can e-file your 2020 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail.
  • Allow 16 weeks for processing.

See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.

You can check the status of your amended return here, but allow 3 weeks after filing for it to show up.

In TurboTax Online, to claim the Recovery Rebate credit please do the following:

  1. Sign into your account and continue from where you left off
  2. Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Federal Review on the top of the screen
  3. On the next page titled Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount, click on Continue
  4. Follow the interview
  5. TurboTax will determine whether you are entitled to any additional stimulus
  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of your form 1040.

Can I still recover rebate?

Only closely related dependents, under age 17, qualified for the first two ($500 and $600) stimulus payments.

All dependents qualify for the third ($1400) one, which is for tax year 2021.

Does my grand daughter, whom I've raised all her life count as a relative. Dah... I know what it means.

Can I still recover rebate?

Q.  Does my grand daughter, whom I've raised all her life count as a close relative?

A. Yes.

In addition to being under 17, at the end of 2020, she must meet the "qualifying Child" dependent rules.

There are two types of dependents, "Qualifying Children"(QC) and standard ("Qualifying Relative" in IRS parlance even though they don't have to actually be related). There is no income limit for a QC but there is an age limit, student status, a relationship test and residence test.

If you entered all of your dependents correctly and they qualify for the rebate, they would have been added automatically and you would’ve had to have taken extra steps to remove the rebate. If you did not receive a rebate for one of your dependents, either you enter their information incorrectly or they do not qualify for the rebate.

A qualifying person for the recovery rebate is your dependent, who is under age 17, and who lives in your home more than half the year. This must be your child, grandchild, niece or nephew, or younger sibling.

You mentioned a granddaughter. If your granddaughter lived in your home more than half the nights of the year, and is under age 17, and has a Social Security number, then your granddaughter should have been included in the rebate calculations for line 30.  For example, if you are a married couple with one dependent, you should qualify for $2900 in round one and $1800 in round two. If you only received the stimulus payments for yourself and your spouse, you would have received $2400 and $1200. When you entered those figures in TurboTax, TurboTax would have claimed the additional $1100 for your dependent on line 30.

if you entered the dependent‘s information incorrectly so that it appeared to the IRS that they did not qualify, then you could file an amended return to change their information. However, if you entered their information correctly and they did not qualify, there is nothing you can do now to get anything additional because they don’t qualify.
