Can I do more than one return with the Turbo Tax online. Normally, I download TTax and can do more than one return. This was $60.00, and I see the downloaded verison is

Technically one "Can" use Online to prepare up-to 5 tax returns from the same email source

...BUT.....each one must be prepared in an entirely different "Online" account...with a unique UserID and Pwd.  And then if the data in the tax return being prepared requires a higher version than"Free" one offers, each of those has to pay the software Fee again for whatever version is needed.  (If you attempt to redo a new file in any one account, you irreversibly overwrite and destroy the data  from the first one prepared)

For preparing any number of separate real and test  tax returns, Desktop/download software is better, as you now realize...and desktop Basic is...ehhh... "ok" if you don't need any state forms.  Desktop Deluxe is really the minimum I would consider (opinion)

I purchase the deluxe version from Costco.  Then changed my mind and used the Free version for myself as I am retired.  Now i want to use the purchased version from my Wife's return.  how do I start my wife's return as I starts off  my mi name and not my wifes name.

@sparkmanlaw You did not mention this--but why are you filing separate returns instead of filing a joint return with your spouse?  Do you have the mistaken idea that your retirement income will not be taxable if you file that way?

If you were legally married at the end of 2019 your filing choices are married filing jointly or married filing separately.

Married Filing Jointly is usually better, even if one spouse had little or no income. When you file a joint return, you and your spouse will get the married filing jointly standard deduction of $24,400 (+$1300 for each spouse 65 or older)  You are eligible for more credits including education credits, earned income credit, child and dependent care credit, and a larger income limit to receive the child tax credit.

If you choose to file married filing separately, both spouses have to file the same way—either you both itemize or you both use standard deduction. Your tax rate will be higher than on a joint return. Some of the special rules for filing separately include: you cannot get earned income credit, education credits, adoption credits, or deductions for student loan interest. A higher percent of your Social Security benefits may be taxable. Your limit for SALT (state and local taxes and sales tax) will be only $5000 per spouse. In many cases you will not be able to take the child and dependent care credit. The amount you can contribute to a retirement account will be affected. If you live in a community property state, you will be required to provide additional information regarding your spouse’s income. ( Community property states:  AZ, CA, ID, LA, NV, NM, TX, WA, WI)

If  you are using online TurboTax to prepare your returns, you will need to prepare two separate returns and pay twice.

@sparkmanlaw   Did you get the CD Desktop program installed on your computer and activated with the 14 digit License Code?  You don't log into the online version.  Online and Desktop program are completely different and separate.  The Desktop program can do unlimited returns.  You should have used it for your return too.

In the Desktop program go up to File-New to start a new return.  The Desktop program doesn't see your online return or know anything so it should not be asking anything about you.

Online is only good for 1 return per account.  But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts.   How to start another return in the Online version
