@tvhart If you are a W-2 employee you cannot deduct any job-related expenses on a federal return.  Or are you self-employed?  Are you an independent contractor?

@tvhart That did not answer the question that was asked.   Do you receive a W-2 from an employer from which Social Security, Medicare and tax are withheld?   Or are you an independent contractor---do you work for yourself?

If you are self-employed and your home is your primary place of business, you can deduct the costs of the home office portion that is used for operating your business, no costs for space you use as an employee can be deducted.  Only the business portion of those costs would be deductible on your Schedule C business tax return.

You qualify for this deduction if you use part of your home regularly and exclusively for your business. To qualify, your home office must be:

  • Located in a separate area in your home where you don't mix business with other activities
  • Used for business on an ongoing basis, not just once in a while

Can I take the home office deduction?

If you are self-employed with home office expenses, use this link for instructions to enter in TurboTax

Where do I enter the home office deduction for my business?
