Yikes. This year my Taxable Social Sec. Benefits for 2024 (6b) is 0.00 (down from $20,455 last year)
Last year ('23) 6a was $32,458 and 6b (taxable portion) was $20,455
This year ('24) 6a is $33,488 and 6b shows at $0.00
How can that be? Is this a software glitch? Shouldn't this year's 6b be similar to last year?
Thanks much to help me understand this... im making sure its not a mistake to go ahead and file.

We have noticed some users who are either missing or answering incorrectly on a screen that asks if you lived in a foreign country while receiving Social Security---check through the screens for the SS income again and make sure you did not mess up on that screen.
@opus57 Yeah, as already commented, EDIT that SSA-1099 entry and make sure you said NO to the question about living in certain other foreign countries (or did you live outside USA in one of those countries listed??).

Beyond that, I'd be interested to know how you initially entered your SSA-1099.
Like, did you type in the numbers? or did you upload a picture or PDF of your SSA-1099?
It's possible that uploading a picture or PDF caused the problem with the non-USA country setting....IF...if that was done.
SSA-1099 entered by uploading pdf.
I've already filed ... how do I view/edit SSA-1099 after filing on TTax.. wanna check on the "living in foreign countries).
Many thanks
Hold off on that a bit.
The taxable amount really depends on what other income you had too.
1) What $$ amount is on line 11 of your current form 1040?
and
2) Are you filing as Single person? Or MFJ? or MFS?
You can print your return by saving it as a PDF, including all worksheets, and look for the Social Security Benefits Worksheet.
The first question at the top of the page shows checkboxes for taxpayer and/or spouse to indicate whether either person is a US citizen but a resident of certain foreign countries. If either box is checked, then that person's Social Security benefit is not taxable.
If the box was checked, you will most likely receive a letter from the IRS stating that your Social Security benefit calculation was changed and your refund will be reduced. If you do not get that letter from the IRS and a box was checked, then you should amend your return.
