2022 returns not showing up in desktop version

I opened 2022 ttax premier to continue with tax planning for the end of year, but there were NO data files.  I just used it a month ago, and now every single data file is missing.  the program starts with "welcome to turboxtax" and the transfer options only give me 2021 returns.  But i've already used it for 2022 returns.   Yet, when I open the 2023 ttax premier, then the prior year data files are found.  I don't understand why the 2022 program doesn't see them at all.  HELP!

You need to do a search on your computer, all hard drives, all removable drives and any cloud storage you may have used.  Search for files which have a file extension of .tax2022.

TurboTax will store all tax data files and any saved PDF's in the TurboTax folder within the Documents directory, unless the user changed the default location for saved files.

If the 2023 program is locating the 2022 tax data files for transfer then those files will be in the TurboTax folder.

When you start the 2022 program click on File in the upper left of the desktop program screen, then click on Open Tax Return, if not found then click on Find a tax file.

Thanks for your quick response.  When I click on file, the program opens with "Welcome to Turbotax", it isn't locating any files.  I admit that it is weird that the 2023 program is able to retrieve them and transfer them over.  I didn't change the location of the files, and as I had mentioned in my original post, I had just used the 2022 version in november, as I was actively doing tax planning for myself.  But as of now, the 2022 program is not finding any active 2022 data files. I am completely stumped.

Do the 2022 tax data files show up in the TurboTax folder within the Documents directory?

If they do then make sure the TurboTax program for 2022 is closed.  Then double click on the .tax2022 tax data file.  This should start the 2022 program and open the 2022 tax return.

I can't see the file extensions in file explorer.  All I see is the name of the file, and the date and the size.   Yes, the 2022 files do show up in the Turbotax directory.  When I do a search for .tax2022 files using file explorer, none are found.  It's maddening.   They do show up in the directory, but the program doesn't see them for some reason.

The File name should look something similar to this - 2022 Doe J Form 1040 Individual Tax Return.tax2022

You should see the column headings of Name, Date Modified, Type and Size

In the column of Type the tax data file will be shown as TurboTax 2022 Document

Check for a One Drive folder.  Microsoft is known for putting files in One Drive without your permission.  

Some people have discovered their files were under their administrator username. They didn't remember that they had to log in with administrator privileges at some point when installing the desktop version, so they started their returns and saved them while using their admin user account. (In this case, people were returning and logging into their usual, non-admin user account, not realizing what happened and not finding their files under their primary "user".)

Yes, that actually worked. when I clicked on the actual tax return, ttax 2022 opened it up with the amounts in it.  But why doesn't it open it up the normal way, when you can just continue working on a return as you usually do?

Sorry, cannot answer why it is not showing up when you start the 2022 tax program.

Since the 2022 tax return has been opened, Save the return.  Click on File and then click on Save.  Close the 2022 TurboTax program and then re-open the program and see if the saved tax data file shows up to be Continued.

Yes, actually that also worked.  I saved it and closed the program.  and then when I opened it, the file was there.  Now i have to do that with the other files from 2022.  THANK YOU!!

@sforgash I am just a long time user of the TurboTax desktop editions.  Trying to help out other users with the TurboTax programs and their tax questions.

As an aside, the tax program, for a particular year, does lose the directory path to your tax files.....if you uninstall and reinstall TTX for that year.   BUT, if you didn't do that, it's hard to know why the internal shortcut to your file was lost for your particular setup.

In my case, and many others,  the 2022 file data entry forms are wiped clean.  One can still print a copy of the forms but you can no longer review or change the forms.  This is different from previous years (<2019?) and cause great confusion and difficulty when trying to gather info for audits or other purposes or if one submits the return after April.  Turbo Tax still doesn't acknowledge the issue exists and is losing customers.  I'm hanging on one more year but uncertain if I will continue.  Two years ago, I had to re-enter all info for multiple tax returns and one year all data was lost.
