Why are my Child Credits not being calculated?

During the Summary review of my Federal Taxes:

Federal Taxes Owed - $20,058

Federal Taxes you've paid, PLUS certain credits - $17,088  (This is the taxed amount from paychecks w/o credits included)

When I open the Summary Breakdown, it says my Total Payments and Credits is - $21,288.  This number breaks down as follows:

Federal Tax withholdings - $17,088 (same number as above shown on main Summary)

Child Tax Credit - $4,000

Child Care Credit - $200

Totaling the $21,288

Why does the Summary Breakdown include my Child Tax Credits but the main Summary Page does not? Causing me to owe money.  It seems the $21,288 figure is the accurate figure which includes my Child Tax Credits but is not being used.

Why are my Child Credits not being calculated?

Don't go by the summary or review screens.  Look at your actual tax return.

Why are my Child Credits not being calculated?

I am having the exact same issue with roughly the same amounts.  Why are credits not showing towards the taxes paid plus credits?

To clarify and assist you further, we will need a diagnostic copy of your return. Be assured that no personal information is included in the diagnostic copy. Just the data entries.  For us to receive the diagnostic copy we need you to follow the following steps if you are using TurboTax online (I will list the steps for TurboTax desktop below):

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account in a browser
    • If you are using the TurboTax Mobile app, you must sign in to TurboTax.com from a browser (on your phone or other device) instead
  2. Open or continue your return
  3. Select Tax Tools, and then Tools
  4. In the Tools Center pop-up, select Share my file with Agent
    • You will be notified that all personally identifiable information (PII) is being removed
  5. Note and best to write down the seven-digit token number that appears
    • Relay this token number to us
  6. Select X to close the Tools Center pop-up

If you are using TurboTax desktop, please use the following steps:

  1. Switch to interview mode in TurboTax
  2. Go to any screen except the Welcome screen
  3. From the menu, select:
    • Online if they’re on a PC
    • Help if they’re on a Mac
  4. Select Send Tax File to Agent
    • You will be notified that all personally identifiable information (PII) is being removed
  5. Note and best to write down the seven-digit token number that appears
    • Relay this token number to us
  6. In the pop-up, select Send to save a copy to your computer.

Once we receive this, we should be able to look closer at the issue you are having and hopefully come to a resolution.

Why are my Child Credits not being calculated?

The 2021 child-related credits were very generous.  Lots of people are being taken by surprise this year when they find out the credits for 2022 are lower than they were last year.

The tax laws changed for child-related credits and are much less generous for 2022.

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number.    Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment.  If your child was born in 2022 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.

Have you entered income from working in 2022?  If not,  you will not receive an income tax refund based on having dependent children.

The rules for getting the child tax credit on a 2021 tax return and now on a 2022 return are very different.  For 2021 you could get $3600 for a child under 6 or $3000 for a child between 6 and 17 even if you had no income/did not work.   That is NOT the way it will work for your 2022 tax return.  The “old” rules are back.

The maximum amount of the child tax credit is now $2000 per child; the refundable “additional child tax credit” amount is $1500.   In order to get that credit, you have to have income from working.  The credit is calculated based on the amount you earned above $2500 multiplied by 15%, up to the full $1500 per child. If the amount you earned was too low, you will not get the full $1500.

If your child is older than 16 at the end of 2022, you do not get the CTC.  But you may still get the non-refundable $500 credit for other dependents instead.

And for the Earned Income Credit—-the rules are back to the “old” rules—

Those under 25 and over 65 without children are not eligible as they were uniquely in 2021.   And you cannot use your income from any earlier tax year to get the EIC for a 2022 return.  There is no “lookback” for 2022.  EIC for 2022 will be based on the income you earned by working in 2022.
