stimulus check for child born in 2021

Hello,

My daughter was born April 2021. Can I claim a credit for both the 2nd and 3rd stimulus checks, since the 3rd stimulus check is a continuation of the 2nd stimulus check?

You cannot get any of the second stimulus check since it was based on a 2020 return  and the third stimulus payment will be received on the 2021 return for any child born in 2021  ....   you cannot amend the 2020 return for the stimulus payments.  

As for the advance of the 2021 CTC  eventually you should be able to use the IRS portal to add the child  however if you cannot then you will simply get it on the 2021 return  ...

The "3rd stimulus" is only a "continuation" in the sense that it was a campaign promise.  The 3 stimulus payments were created by three separate laws.  A child born in 2021 is only eligible for round 3.  

Round 3 stimulus payments are only being made based on 2020 tax return information, there is no way to enroll your child for a stimulus payment.  Instead, you can claim a $1400 recovery rebate on your 2021 tax return.  See the FAQs on this page. https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-third-economic-impact-payment-topic-b-e...

Your child will also be eligible for the enhanced child tax credit ($3600) and the advance payments.  However, the IRS site to enroll your newborn is not ready yet.  If you don't get the full amount of the advance payments, the child tax credit will be reconciled on your 2021 tax return.  Getting the advance payments doesn't change how much you receive, just when you receive it.   This is the site where you would manage your advance CTC payments, although the function to "add a newborn" is not ready yet.

Your child will need a social security number before you can receive the recovery rebate or enroll in advance CTC payments.

Does turbo tax automatically prompt you for the recovery rebate? (2021 tax return) I don’t see an option for that.

Yes, once you enter all your information, you should get a prompt before your file your return.

You can also, visit that page manually by following the steps below:

1. Sign into your account and continue from where you left off.
2. Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Federal Review on the top of the screen.
3. On the next page titled Let's double-check the amount you received; TurboTax will tell you how much you should receive based on the information you have entered. You may have received Letter 6475 in your mail which will show you the amount you have received. If the amount you received matches with what TurboTax is proposing, you will select Yes. If the amounts don't match, then you will select No and enter the amount stated on your Letter 6475. The difference will be added to your refund.

It is very important that the amount stated on your Letter 6475 is entered correctly, or else your refund will get delayed.

We recieved the 3rd stimulus check March 30 2021, for 2 adults and 1 dependent (4200 from 1400x3), then we had another child in November.  TurboTax wants to give us an additional $1400 for the 2nd dependent, even though they were born well after the check was received.  

Is this correct? Parents get $1400 for a child born in the year 2021, even though checks were only sent from March - May?

Yes, it is correct.  A child born in 2021 is eligible to receive the Recovery Rebate Credit of $1,400.
