Smart check sent me to this line. Why am I being asked to enter an amount when am not claiming a child on my return?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Everyone has to answer whether they received advance child tax credit payments. If you did not receive any of those payments between July and December you need to answer that you did not receive any payments.
There are so many scenarios with those payments---like divorced/never married parents who have issues over who received the payments, who claimed the children, etc. --- the software has no way of knowing if any of that involves you---so you have to answer the questions about it.
Please follow these steps to indicate you did not receive any advanced payments:
Everyone has to complete the Schedule 8812 for the advance child tax credit for tax year 2021. All you need to do is enter a 0 (zero) when asked for an amount of advance payments received and Continue. If you are also asked about number of dependents enter a 0. This will complete the process and then the Schedule 8812 will not be included in your tax return and you will be able to file your tax return.

A big thanks to the OP posting this question and the two replies. Never been asked this ever before and with out kids grown and gone for yrs, really thought it strange why TT was asking me now. Thought maybe it was a Covid thing or something. Went searching and found this thread put my mind to rest.
"What is I don't have Letter 6419" -
the canned response to this from TT is:
"If you or your spouse didn’t get a letter for any of these reasons, it’s okay. The person that didn’t receive the letter should enter 0 for their box 1."
this is mis-leading and you should not enter "0" if you received a credit and filed jointly last year. Go to the IRS site and get the statement amounts for each filer. Add the amounts up and enter that value. or use the check/direct deposit amounts total and enter that value.
@tizik81 You are misinterpreting the replies you see on this thread. The replies were to users who have no children and who did not receive advance child tax credit payments. They needed help with getting rid of form 8812 so that they could e-file.
