If this improvement was to your personal residence, not on a rental, the cost of the improvement is not deductible on a tax return. The cost is added the basis of the home when it is sold.

Property improvements to personal use property is never deductible. Not ever. At best, it adds to your cost basis of the property. So this won't matter until the tax year you sell the property.
Now there are some property improvements that can be done to personal use property that may get one a tax credit for the tax year the work is done. But those are related to energy conservation improvements. For example, the installation of solar panels on your primary residence, or the installation of an electric vehicle charging station in your personal residence.
