I need some help here. I need to get my taxes files today and I have been trying for a week to find some info on how i can claim my tools purchased for work on my taxes as a deduction. I currently pay out $5800 a year for tools that I have had to purchase to do my job. My employerer doen not help in any way with this. I have been working as a technician buying tools for over 20 years and never claimed them. I am out on comp right now and if i dont find a way I will have to come up with 900 to pay the irs i dont have. PLEASE HELP!!

Are you a W-2 employee?
Sorry---W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on a federal return. Job-related expenses were eliminated as a federal deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond. Your state tax laws might be different in AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.
If you are an independent contractor then your tool purchases can go on the Schedule C you complete for your business expenses.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

To apply for a payment plan with the IRS
Apply Online for a Payment Plan
You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment. For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

How is this fair? So working in a shop for someone else and spending my own money to buy the tools that I must have to do the job cant be deducted? But the owner can deduct what he buys? I have no choice but to buy tools to keep up with the changing demands and more complex systems. I shouldnt have to eat that 100%

I dont think you said. Do you get a W2 or are you a 1099 independent contractor? If you are a 1099 you file your income on Schedule C for self employment and can write off all your tools and expenses. But you have to pay self employment tax.

So there is nothing I can do? Just owe the irs $900 and they will asses penalties and fees that I cant pay along with the $900? How is that fair? How is it fair that the employee that has to spend thier own money to buy tools for his job cant deduct them? Its ludacrus

@VolvoGirl I get a w2. But its quite unfair that the employer can claim a tv in the waiting area as a dection but an employee whos spent over 30,000 in less than 10 years is screwed

Don't you have enough withholding taken out of your checks? You need to give your employer a new W4 to have more taken out. Did you get the EIC credit?
