Other Dependent Credit issue

I just realized TT did not include the Other Dependent credit ($500) for my 17-year old (full-time student) dependent son in 2023.  I have been trying to amend my 2023 return in TT, and its still not allowing me the Other Dependent credit.  Any ideas?

Other Dependent Credit issue

@KBear The issue may be that you answered one of the questions about the dependent incorrectly.

You should have indicated that they lived with you for the Whole Year.  That they were not Married.  That there was no one else in the household that supported the dependent.  That the dependent did NOT provide over one-half of their own support.  That you did Not check the box that the Social Security number cannot be used for employment.

If you answered these questions correctly and are still not getting the Other Dependent Credit and the ODC box is not checked then delete the dependent and re-enter.

Other Dependent Credit issue

Are you sure you are not getting the credit? It should be on Form 1040 line 19.

Is your son listed as a dependent on page 1 of Form 1040? If not, that's why you're not getting the credit.

The credit for other dependents is nonrefundable. That means it cannot reduce your tax below zero. If Form 1040 line 18 is zero your tax is already zero, so you cannot get the credit for other dependents (or any other nonrefundable credit).

The credit for other dependents is phased out for high incomes. If your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is over $239,000 ($439,000 if married filing jointly) the credit for other dependents is completely phased out.

(The phaseout is actually based on Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI). For the credit for other dependents, MAGI is the same as AGI unless your tax return includes Form 2555 or Form 4563 or you excluded income from Puerto Rico.)

Thank you.

Yes, I am sure I did not get the credit.  Line 19 is blank.

Yes, son is listed on page 1, but neither CTC nor ODC box is checked.

My tax liability is well over the credit, but my income is well under $239,000.

It seems like a TT error, but I cannot get it change.  I called TT help, but they say its not a glitch and credit would populate if I was entitled to it.

THANK YOU.  I had answered the questions correctly, so I deleted him and re-entered.  That did the trick.  What a frustrating experience.
